I’d love to hear from you so drop me a comment and let’s chat.
What is a Now Moment?
A Now Moment is an instant in life when you pause and are consciously aware of what’s happening to you ‘in this moment’.
Ferdinand understood Now Moments!
You can also think of Now Moments as taking time to ‘stop and smell the roses’ or ‘enjoying the journey of life’ or any number of other cliches that help you appreciate the present moment. After all, when we recognize that all we have in life is ‘this moment’ then we can begin to appreciate why it’s so critically important to enjoy the special moments of life while you are living them – because they don’t last forever.
Do Now Moments Only Occur During Special Occasions?
It’s a common misconception to believe that only special occasions and big events are the triggers that create Now Moments. Nothing could be further from the truth!
Sure, special events like going on a Disney Cruise, enjoying an amazing dinner with friends and family, and similar situations can provide us with opportunities for Now Moments but that’s mainly because, when we are experiencing a special occasion, our minds are more attuned to paying attention to the fact that something important IS happening and therefore we are more apt to recognize Now Moments at those times.
HOWEVER, if we only ever look for Now Moments during the special occasions of life, we’ll miss out on 99% of the Now Moments that happen in our life because the fact is that each and every day there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy Now Moments…
…but only IF you actually recognize them, pause, and take the time to savor them.
Examples of Now Moments in Every Day Life
The opportunity to experience a Now Moment is limited only by your ability to recognize them and take the time to enjoy them because Now Moments literally occur countless times every day.
Here are some examples of Now Moments from everyday life that I’ve savored recently – perhaps it will give you some ideas as well…
Jax learning to be a chef
Cooking a langostino pasta dinner with my son Jax;
Enjoying a relaxing glass of wine after dinner on the back patio with my wife Anne;
Finally solving the rubik’s cube with the help of Jackson’s research (and hey it only took me 48 years to do it!). I challenge you to pick one up and try it too…
Talking about our day as a family during our nightly bedtime ritual;
And the list goes on and on.
Does it give you any ideas for some of the Now Moments in YOUR life?
Keeping Track of Now Moments
Although you certainly don’t need to formally keep track of your Now Moments in order to enjoy them, I like doing this. As you may recall, I’m a big believer in Tony Robbin’s wisdom…
“If your life is worth living, it’s worth recording.”
Tony Robbins
As a result, I like to keep track of the Now Moments that occur in my life in my daily journal (BTW I use Google Docs for my journaling now because I can access my journals on any device and record them at any time).
I also like using the free mobile app called Daylio to make notes on my Now Moments. If you’re not familiar with Daylio read my article about it here.
Daylio Mobile Journal
Additionally I like talking about Now Moments with my family and teaching my children how to recognize them so they can better appreciate their lives from an early age.
What about you – how do you keep track of the Now Moments in YOUR life?
Don’t Just Take My Word for It
Far be it from me to expect you to simply listen to my words of advice when I realize you don’t know me that well. Instead let me recommend another wisdom guru to you – surely you’ve heard what the legendary savant Ferris Bueller had to say on this topic right?

Now Moments in YOUR Life
Perhaps reading this little bit of wisdom is one of the Now Moments in your life today – if so that would be awesome and be sure to let me know in the comments below.
I wonder what other Now Moments are waiting for you today?
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k Sale – There is an unadvertised 50% Off Sale on Amazon Firestick 4k that is running until Dec 31, 2019 or while supplies last.
If you read my blog you know that the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k is the #1 product I recommend for people who are trying to get rid of cable and learn how to stream tv online. I’ve written tons of articles about the Amazon Fire TV Stick and how I use it to watch tv online. This is a great sale because you can save 50% off the cost HOWEVER you have to use the PROMO CODE “4KFIRETV” to get the discount.
You must use Promo Code “4KFIRETV” at in the PAYMENT PROMOTION CODE area at CHECKOUT to reduce price. The price will then reduce from $49.99 to $24.99
Successful use of the promo code will look like this:
Price with Promo Code
Nov 14 update to this article: Since the publication of this story on my site and others, there’s been reports of difficulties from people trying to get the discount. The problem appears to be on the Amazon side – although the code worked for me and numerous others, you can also see comments on Amazon that many others are having problems. The problem appears to be related to unclear ‘eligibility’ rules – you have to be a prime member, you can only buy 1, etc, however the “learn more” link from Amazon is no longer working to explain the rules. Doh!
Not sure why this has been so difficult, however I would keep a eye out on this deal – after all this is one of the premier deals on Black Friday and it’s actually supposed to run thru Dec 31 so surely Amazon will resolve this soon.
Best Tents for Family Camping – Cub Scout camping, family camping trips, and even backyards camp outs are always fun, and having the right tent makes things a whole heck of a lot easier. In this article, we’ll give you our recommendations for the best tents for family camping so your camping trips will be a blast.
Editor’s Note: Our recommended tents in this article are specifically focused on FAMILY Camping and similar situations where you’re basically driving to the camp grounds and you don’t care how heavy the tent is/isn’t because you’re not backpacking with it. It goes without saying then that the tents discussed here would not be ideal for backpackers and solo campers who are looking to pack light and streamline their list – if you’re looking to keep it super simple, check out this article instead.
What is a Family Tent? Why does it matter?
Having kids in Cub Scouts, I’ve been on a number of family camping trips and the biggest mistake I see people make when they are new to family camping is not buying a big enough tent.
Every year I inevitably see a family new to camping who brings a ‘4-person tent’ to the campsite for their 4-person family – only to discover that their tent is way too small!
Courtesy SWNS.com
Don’t let this happen to you. Instead read this article and learn why you’ll want AND need a larger tent if you want to be comfortable in a family camping situation.
So what is a “Family” Tent?
Simply put a Family Tent is one that is big enough to be able to:
house all your family AND your camping gear (to include ‘space eating’ items like air mattresses/cots/etc);
give you room to spread out inside the tent and be comfortable (not cramped!) – that means being able to STAND UP inside, have room to change clothes, etc;
if the budget allows provide multiple ‘rooms’ in the tent for kids vs adults.
Lots of room INSIDE this tent – that’s what YOU want too!
Remember, this is NOT backpacking in the high country where you need a small, lightweight tent you can easily carry on hikes. Instead we’re talking about FAMILY camping where you can drive to the campsite – that means go BIG.
And when in doubt, go bigger!
Don’t underestimate how much stuff you camp with in family camping situations – this is especially true if you plan to…
sleep on air mattress or cots (these items take up a LOT of space);
there are going to be 4+ people in your tent (that’s a lot of gear, clothes, etc);
camp for 2 days or more;
Did you know?
If there are 4 people in our family, a 4-person tent will probably NOT be big enough for you and all your stuff.
Family Tents – How Big is Big Enough?
A simple rule of thumb I use it to buy a tent that is 1.5 to 2 times the size of the number of people that are camping.
So if you have 4 people, you should at least be getting a 6 person tent (4 x 1.5 = 6), 8 person tent (4 x 2 = 8), or larger if you have more gear.
ACTION ITEM – do the math on your family size to determine the basics of how big a tent you’ll need. Then do a quick inventory of the overall space requirements of the camping gear you want to store inside the tent. Once you have an idea of how much space you’ll need, you’re ready to shop for a family tent for camping!
Best Tents for Family Camping
As you’ve seen from our discussion above, it can be confusing to shop for family sized tents until you understand how much space you really need.
Now that you know what to expect, let’s review my top rated tents for family camping.
Next, I’ll provide more info about each family camping tent along with direct links to Amazon so you can review at your leisure…

As a side note I have the Browning Big Horn and we’ve been using it for 4+ years – it’s awesome and provides more than enough space for my family and all our gear.

What about Ozark Trail or Coleman Family Tents?
If you are looking to save some money or you’re not sure if family camping is going to be something you do very often, then you might consider going with a tent from Ozark Trail (a brand popular at Walmart) or the classic brand Coleman family tents.
Are you considering signing up for ATT Now as your Streaming TV Provider? If so, this article is for you. We’ll tell you the pro’s and con’s of using AT&T Now from a point of view of an actual consumer.
[lwptoc]
Editor’s Note: This article is part of a series devoted to helping people learn how to stream tv online. If you want to see a review of all the major streaming tv providers and know which services I recommend (hint: it’s NOT ATT Now), then be sure to watch this vid…
What is AT&T Now?
AT&T Now is a Streaming TV App that will allow you to enjoy a tv viewing experience similar to having cable tv.
Is AT&T Now the same as DirecTV Now?
I get it, not everyone has heard of “AT&T Now” and a lot of people are confused. This streaming service used to be called “DirecTV Now”. In 2019, AT&T changed the name of “DirecTV Now” to “AT&T Now”.
You can watch AT&T Now on pretty much every streaming device (Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, etc), as well as on tablets/phones and computers.
Bonus – You can watch it anywhere, not just in your house.
Does AT&T Now Have Different Channel Packages?
Yes, and this is the #1 best thing about AT&T Now.
If you want a service that offers the most customization options, AT&T Now and Sling TV are your best choices.
The problem is that in 2019 AT&T made some major changes to the DirecTV Now channel packages when they rebranded the service as AT&T Now. Prior to 2019, DirecTV Now used to have 4 plans to choose from that ranged from $35-70/month. It used to look like this…
Sadly that is not the case any longer.
In 2019 AT&T changed the name and jacked up the prices AND drastically reduced the channels available in the lower priced tiers.
Now there are two options they promote:
By the time you read this article, the prices will probably have been increased again. At the time of this writing, the lowest priced option was $50 and it only included 40 channels – but they give you HBO. Just to be clear, for that same $50 you used to get 80+ channels with DirecTV Now.
As you can see, AT&T Now costs more money for LESS content.
To be fair, there are still other options, if you don’t mind paying more, you can choose from their other options:
See that Choice Plan for $110? That’s the one that most compares to the old “Just Right” Plan that used to be $50. Ouch – talk about price gouging!
Fair Balance: if price is not an issue and you want to be able to customize your package, I will say again that AT&T Now is still one of the best options for streaming tv online.
Does AT&T Now Limit the Number of Screens I Can Watch on?
Yes, you can only watch AT&T Now on 2 screens (AKA streams) at the same time.
If you are willing to pay an additional $5/month and then you can watch it on 3.
On the surface this screen limit seems kind of sucky, and it isn’t good compared to other services like YouTube TV or PlayStation Vue, but remember this only applies to your ATT Now viewing so if you have Amazon Prime TV and/or Netflix and/or Amazon Channels and/or you wanna watch YouTube, none of those count as ‘streams’ against your ATT Now screen limit so in reality it may not be that bad unless you have a big family.
Does ATT Now have a DVR?
Finally the answer is YES. It’s been a loooong wait for DirecTV Now to get a DVR but at last they have one and AT&T Now has continued to offer a DVR.
As for the DVR itself, the free version gives you 20 hours of recordings and you can save them for 30 days. You can pay an extra $10/month and get up to 100 hours with 90 days storage.
To be honest with you the ATT Now DVR sucks – compared to other online streaming tv providers the ATT Now DVR is far behind. YouTube TV, Sling TV, and PlayStation Vue all have better DVR options.
I used to be willing to live with the ATT Now DVR but after the price increases, etc I can no longer overlook the fact that it sucks.
DVR Warning – you may or may not be able to skip through commercials – according to the Direct TV Rep I talked to it depends on the network and the show.
Does ATT Now have On-Demand TV Shows and Movies?
Yes, besides their ’72-hour’ rewind feature on most networks, ATT Now’s on-demand service offers mostly tv shows from the current seasons and some movie content.
Warning – depending on the network and show, you may or may not be able to skip through commercials and you may not even be able to rewind or fast-forward. Lest you think this isn’t important see my “important consideration #4” in my “Essential Guide to Cord Cutting” article for my story about watching Anthony Bourdain with no less than 7 required commercial breaks of 7 commercials each!
Does ATT Now offer Local Channels and Regional Sports Networks?
It depends on where you live. In my area they offer a lot and this is another feature in the cap of ATT Now.
One of the main reasons we previously chose ATT Now as our (former) cord cutting streaming provider was because it offered the best selection of local channels and regional sports networks.
Basically we used to be able to get every local channel we want with DirecTV Now, however AT&T Now no longers offers all the locals in my area and there are other better options for us (namely YouTube TV).
To see the local channels available from ATT Now in YOUR area use this link:
Does DirecTV Now offer Premium Channels like HBO and Showtime?
Yes they do – in fact for the 2 mains packages they promote (Plus and Max plans), HBO is included. If you don’t choose the Plus or Max plan, you can add HBO separately and/or you could add another premium network like Showtime, Cinemax, etc.
What Promotions does ATT Now offer to New Subscribers?
There is usually always a promotion offered from ATT Now for new subscribers. Besides a 7-day free trial, ATT Now usually has some pretty sweet promotions, sometimes giving away an Apple TV, Roku devices, etc.
Visit their site to see their current offers or better yet (TIP) use their chat feature and see what kind of deals a ATT Rep will make you. I was offered multiple months at 50% off and additional credits when I spoke with them. Good luck getting thru to the right dept with ATT’s Help Desk though.
What is the ATT Now User Interface (UI) and TV Guide like?
The user interface and channel guides are really important in my opinion and can make or break the experience for people who are switching from cable tv to streaming services. For example, Hulu with Live TV has a great product, but their UI is so bad (they basically don’t even have a channel guide!) that the service doesn’t work for us because we can’t find a way to easily navigate to find out what’s on.
Thankfully ATT Now recently updated their UI and it’s pretty good. Here are some screenshots:
AT&T Now – My Video Review
As I mentioned above, my family used to use DirecTV Now as our streaming tv provider, however we ditched the service in 2019 for the reasons I explain in this vid…
ATT Now vs Other Streaming TV Providers
If you’re looking for a comparison of ATT Now vs Sling TV vs Hulu Plus Live TV vs YouTube TV and other streaming tv providers then you’ll find all that and more on our main page: Best Streaming TV Providers.
As I said, I used to recommend AT&T Now as my #1 streaming tv provider and I was a long-time customer HOWEVER AT&T has basically ruined the service – higher prices, less channels for lower-priced tiers, a DVR that sucks compared to other providers, and only 2 streams make ATT Now a poor choice for most people looking to stream tv online AND save money.
That said, if money is not an issue and you want a service that provides the most customization options AND gives you access to most/all local channels then ATT Now may still be a viable option for you.
It’s just a shame that what could have been an awesome service for most Americans to use to get rid of cable tv has basically been turned into an online version of cable – complete with the high prices and poor service.
Which Streaming TV Providers do I recommend now?
If you don’t need local tv (either because you have an HD Antennae or you don’t care about locals), then I recommend SLING TV or Philo TV. And of course Pluto TV is a MUST have because it’s a FREE streaming tv app.
If you DO want local tv (for news, weather, and local sports teams) then I recommend…
Which Streaming TV Provider is the best? We compare AT&T TV Now, Fubo TV, Hulu with Live TV, Philo TV, Pluto TV, Sling TV, YouTube TV, Amazon, & Netflix.
UPDATE: since this article was published there have been changes in the streaming tv app world so we have recorded a new video – you can watch the NEW VIDEO here or continue reading this article (the info is still valuable but may not be as current what’s in the new article).

Daylio App – have you heard of the DAYLIO Micro Diary and Mood Tracker app? I’m in love with this little app – and you should be too. In this article I tell you what Daylio is and how I use it to improve my life. My goal in doing so is to introduce you what I believe is a great product (and best of all it’s FREE) – my hope is that Daylio can make a real difference in your life too.
Daylio App
What is Daylio?
Daylio is an easy to use mobile app that allows you to track your moods and daily activities. With regular use (as little as 5 days) you’ll start getting feedback reports that reveal trends.
Daylio Screenshots
Daylio’s trends help you identify the connection between what activities you do when you feel great and what’s happening in your life when you have bad days.
What I love about Daylio is…
Daylio is one of my favorite apps because it’s easy to use, it’s free, and you can modify the activities to fit your needs.
What I love about this app is that is shows me trends – for the day, month, and even the year. This allows me to VISUALLY SEE if I am living a life that’s in balance or if I’m too heavy in one area vs another. I’ve used this app every single day for over 1000 days and the feedback it’s providing is invaluable!
Daylio makes it so easy to keep a mobile life journal because it takes just a few seconds to toggle on/off what you did that day and/or add/modify activities to suit your own system. Because Daylio is so easy/quick to use, it provides an efficient way for me to keep an on-the-go de facto daily journal about life. Add to that the fact that you can also include free text notes for each day (if you want to) and now you’re talking.
Here’s how I use Daylio
I’ve been using Daylio for over 1000 days continuously as you can see here…
I use the Daylio app to track my daily moods and activities. My goal in using the app is to have a quick and easy way to journal my life AND to be able to see trends in terms of what’s working well for me and what isn’t.
The knowledge I get from Daylio allows me to KNOW what I should be doing more of and what I should be nixing from my life.
Daylio allows me to rate how I felt each day (awesome, good, average, not good, awful) AND it lets me get granular with specific activities – would you believe I’m currently tracking 80+ different daily activities? Ha, if you know me at all, this probably does’t surprise you.
Here is are my mood charts and activity counts for the last 1000+ days. My goal is to have more Awesome + Good days than Just OK + Not Good/Awful Days.
Daylio 2017
Daylio 2018
Daylio 2019
As you can see I’ve been able to improve this over time and the reason WHY I’ve been able to do this is by using Daylio to help me identify the activities that help me achieve a Good Day or better.
Are you trying to search Google for specific topics organized by DATE – such as search results for the last day, month, or year? If so, this article and video can help you. I’ll show you…
How to use the TOOLS menu to FILTER Google search so that you only see search results from the past year, past month, past day, even past hour.
How to filter Google search results for a CUSTOM Date Range.
How to SORT the Google search results BY DATE (instead of relevance). What this means is that you can sort results by oldest to newest or newest to oldest instead of just seeing the results organized by Google’s algorithm.
This particular tip applies to Google Search via the full desktop version of Chrome. Unfortunately Google Mobile doesn’t offer the “Tools” drop-down feature any longer – thanks for Brian Burke for pointing this out to the group.
Search Google by Date – Tips & Screenshots
In this section, we’ll show you screenshots for how to set up a FILTER so that you can search Google by date.
This is the step-by-step process on how to get Google’s search results to show by the most recent Year, Month, Week, Day and past hour. It also works if you want to filter Google’s search results by custom dates too.
How to FILTER Google Search Results by Date
Enter you search terms in Google as you normally do.
Click on the TOOLS menu (to the right of Settings on the Search Menu under the Google Search Bar) to begin the Search Google by Date filtering process.
Click on the ANY TIME drop down menu and instead choose to FILTER Google Search by latest year, month, week, 24 hours, or hour (OR) choose “Custom Range” and enter your own date range.
Enjoy your filtered results.
How to SORT Google’s Search Result by Date
Another useful technique that allows you to search Google by date is to use the SORT feature. This allows you to bypass Google’s search results algorithm so that you can see the MOST CURRENT NEWS about your topic.
Here’s how:
First you have to set up a search by date range – i.e. you have to use the Tools Menu and pick a TIME range as we did above (search by hour, day, week, month, year, or custom).
After you do this a new drop down filter will appear. The default setting is ‘sort by relevance’ as you can see in the first picture below.
You want to click on the ‘sort by relevance’ and choose the ‘sorted by date’ option from the drop box – as you can see in second picture below…
Notice the “Sort by Relevance” selection Notice the ‘sorted by date’ option is selected

Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe – which is the better kamado? It seems like this debate has been raging for years now, but in light of new product developments, maybe it’s time to wonder: is there finally a clear winner between these kamado giants? And if so, which kamado king will wear the crown?
In this article, we’ll provide a head-to-head comparison of the Big Green Egg vs the Kamado Joe across 10 categories for review as we examine build quality, innovation, owner satisfaction, average reviews, overall price to value, and more, so put your grilling apron on and let’s get cooking!
[lwptoc]
Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe – Current Products
Before we get into the head-to-head comparison, it’s important to know what’s currently available from each kamado manufacturer since recent updates will play a role in our results. As it stands now, here are each company’s latest kamado’s.
Big Green Egg
Big Green Egg currently offers SEVEN sizes of kamados, they are: The Big Green Egg Mini, Minimax, Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, and 2XL.
Big Green Egg Kamado Lineup
You can see every version of the BGE lineup on the official “How do you like your Eggs?” webpage where you can check out full specs, cooking grill dimensions, available accessories, etc.
The takeaway here is that Big Green Egg offers a kamado for every need. Additionally, outside of the size variations, but for minor updates over the years, the BGE kamado hasn’t changed much since it’s release in 1974. It’s a quality kamado, beloved in the passionate Egghead Community, and continues to be one of the best selling kamados on the market.
Kamado Joe
Like Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe is a retailer that offers a variety of sizes in its kamado lineup. Currently on it’s third major update, the Kamado Joe III lineup is comprised of 3 versions: the Kamado Joe Classic III, Big Joe III, and Pro Joe III. There is also the Kamado Joe Junior.
Kamado Joe Pro Joe
Kamado Joe Big Joe III
Kamado Joe Classic III
Kamado Joe Junior
Additionally, prior versions of the Kamado Joe lineup (particularly the wildly popular Kamado Joe II variations are still widely being sold).
The takeaway here is that, although Kamado Joe doesn’t offer the same breath of size variations as the Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe does offer the most popular size options AND has continued to innovate the kamado technology itself over the years. We’ll see the impact of this in our head-to-head ratings below.
10 Head to Head Comparisons of Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe
In this section we’ll compare the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe kamados across the spectrum of 10 categories. Our goal is to see which kamado maker will emerge as the winner of this long debate.
Conversely, Kamado Joe didn’t come onto the market until 2009 and although the brand has captured a large chuck of the kamado market since then, it doesn’t have near the history of the Big Green Egg.
Winner: Big Green Egg
2 – Build Quality
Big Green Egg Eggtoberfest
Kamados have become so popular that the marketplace is filled with all sorts of kamados – you see them everywhere now and it seems like everyone and their brother has a knockoff version to sell you.
Instead understand that the purchase of a kamado is an investment – an investment into your personal cooking enjoyment and your family’s outdoor lifestyle. Buy a quality kamado and you can expect it to last for a decade or more. Buy a crappy one and you may well have to replace it in a year or two.
BOTH the Big Green Egg and the Kamado Joe are classified in the industry as top of the line kamados for a reason – they are both well built and capable of providing superior performance over the long term.
This is not to say that the Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe haven’t had minor quality control issues in the past, they have. However both companies have continued to improve their products to fix those issues (building with better quality ceramics, improving the hinges, creating a new firebox, etc, etc). As a result, both companies have developed a reputation for high end build quality.
Winner: TIE
3 – Popularity
Given that Big Green Egg has been on the market since 1974 and the Kamado Joe brand is still only about a decade old, there’s really no comparison on this one – ARMIES of EGGHEADS cannot be denied and I wouldn’t dare to argue with them.
Consider these articles about the Big Green Egg Phenomenon…
BTW, another quirky way you can tell is by looking at the swag that people buy on Amazon – there’s a ton for Big Green Egg and not much for Kamado Joe…yet.
Winner – Big Green Egg
4 – Owner Satisfaction AND Brand Loyalty
Gee whiz, it looks like the battle of Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe isn’t much of a contest is it? So far the BGE is running away with this. Should we just crown BGE and be done with it?
Not so fast, because here’s where things start to get interesting.
When it comes to Owner Satisfaction, both Kamado Joe and Big Green Egg claim top spots in the kamado community and owner satisfaction is very high for both brands. Whichever brand you buy you’ll probably end up being satisfied too (at least in terms of overall quality if not overall price to value, but more on that below).
HOWEVER, when it comes to brand loyalty, one thing we can clearly see in the online world is that…
LOTS of people end up switching from Big Green Egg to Kamado Joe, but not many seem to switch from Kamado Joe to Big Green Egg.
I’m guessing the very reason YOU are reading this article is because you’re trying to decide between the two brands. Even the Egghead forums are filled with this question and if you peruse through the threads you’ll see countless stories about how loyal Eggheads made the switch to Kamado Joe (here’s one example of many) and are very happy. You can also find numerous articles online from folks who’ve debated the question and ended up deciding in favor of the Kamado Joe (for example, this article, and this one).
Kamado Joe Block Party
Perhaps the best testament to this is that, in less than a decade, Kamado Joe has become a fierce rival to Big Green Egg and the phrase “Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe” is one of the most popular search term when people shop for a kamado.
Because of all these trends, I would submit to you that Owner Satisfaction is likely a TIE between the two brands, but Brand Loyalty swings in favor of the Kamado Joe (because again, many people have switched from BGE to KJ, but you rarely hear about the switch from KJ to BGE).
Winner: Kamado Joe
5 – Innovation of the Kamado
As we discussed above in the first two categories, both Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe have spearheaded innovations in the kamado market. Ed Fisher and his Big Green Egg company are one of the big reasons why kamados have become so popular in the US and Mr. Fisher was one of the first to turn the 3,000 year old kamado concept into a commercialized product as a result of his innovative ideas. Over the years, Big Green Egg has continued to improve its product (with stronger ceramics, a patented vent door and hinge cap, updated hinges, and more). As such we would be remiss if we didn’t give the Big Green Egg its due as a leading innovator in the kamado world.
As for Kamado Joe, from the early days of the company, it sought to compete with Big Green Egg by producing at least a similar kamado cooker (thus the Kamado Joe Classic 1st Generation – which used to come in red or black). But since it’s launch in 2009, Kamado Joe hasn’t been satisfied with merely producing a similar product – instead the company has continued to innovate in order to try to create a superior kamado.
Kamado Joe Black
Kamado Joe has done more innovations of the overall kamado itself in the last 10 years than Big Green Egg has done in over 40.
Consider the following innovations just to the kamado cooker that Kamado Joe is responsible for…
Kontrol Tower Top Vent – for more precise temperature control and better rain/moisture intrusion prevention.
Multi-panel Firebox – to help prevent cracks in the interior fire box.
Counterbalanced Air Lift Hinge – a safety feature that helps prevent the heavy lid from falling and cracking a problem that used to plague Big Green Eggs.
In fact the new Kamado Joe III is such a game changer in terms of innovation of the kamado cooker that the launch of this product alone may well push the scales in favor of Kamado Joe.
You can read my full review of the new Kamado Joe III here…

For all these reasons, we must conclude…
Winner: Kamado Joe
6 – Innovation of Accessories
This category too offers little competition.
Nobody can argue that Kamado Joe has produced more impactful accessory innovations than Big Green Egg.
Here are just a few GAME-CHANGER Accessories that Kamado Joe is responsible for (click any pick to learn more)…
Kamado Joe JoeTisserie
Kamado Joe Flexible Cooking System
Kamado Joe Pizza DoJoe
Kamado Joe iKamand
And we haven’t even mentioned the wide variation of cooking surfaces that Kamado Joe offers that go beyond just the standard stainless steel grates most kamados come with.
The Kamado Joe accessories are so popular that Egghead Forums are filled with articles about Big Green Egg owners retrofitting their eggs in order to use Kamado Joe accessories in their BGE’s.
So who’s the winner of the kamado accessories innovation category?
Winner: Kamado Joe
7 – Availability
The score is currently 3-2 in favor of Kamado Joe vs Big Green Egg. Is Kamado Joe gonna run away with this game now? Ah, not so fast.
One of the reasons why Big Green Egg is still so popular is that you can find the Big Green Egg in more places – from big box stores to pool supply stores to outdoor kitchen makers and scores of local shops, it seems like Big Green Egg is everywhere. In a 15 mile radius of my house in the Tampa area there are more than 10 dealers selling the Big Green Egg. For Kamado Joe there are only 3.
But the story doesn’t end with just brick and mortar stores – after all, we live in an online shopping world don’t we? And yet, but for the occassional special packages offered by BGE, normally can’t buy the Big Green Egg online.
So the bottom line here is that Big Green Egg rules the ‘shop in person’ world, while Kamado Joe rules the online world. The result then is…
Winner: TIE
8 – Summary of Respected Reviewers
If you’re read my blog before, you know I don’t claim to be something I’m not – I’m just an Average Joe like you and the purpose of this blog is to share ‘practical solutions to real life problems.’ Since most people are not made of money, if you’re considering spending a grand or more on buying a kamado, then you’ll probably want to do your research like I did and you’ll want some honest answers to the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe question.
I’ve written a separate article about my personal viewpoint on the debate, but one of the things I try to do on this blog is provide you with links to OTHER quality reviews and opinions. I think that’s relevant to our head-to-head debate here too. Here are some of the most popular opinion pieces on Google that talk about the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe question…
Both Kamado Joe and Big Green Egg are known for providing top notch customer support in the event of an issue and both feature some of the best warranties in the kamado market.
We’ve made it to the last head-to-head comparison category, perhaps the most important one of all – in the battle of Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe which kamado offers the best price to value?
One of the ways that Kamado Joe captured so much of the kamado market from Big Green Egg is because Kamado Joe not only priced their comparable size kamados well below the price of a similar Big Green Egg, but Kamado Joe also provided a number of free accessories with its grills (including the amazing Divide and Conquer cooking system, nest, ash tool, and more).
Since then Big Green Egg prices have come down. Although if you review the forums noted above that talked about the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe debate, you’ll see that most people still feel that Kamado Joe offers the better overall value.
Now it should be noted that with the release of the Kamado Joe III, the prices for Kamado Joes of a similar size are now higher in some cases than a Big Green Egg, HOWEVER it’s important to see what’s included in the package.
Kamado Joe III’s come standard with the SloRoller insert, the Divide and Conquer Cooking System, Ash Basket, Ash Tools, Kontrol Tower, Heat Deflectors, and more.
If you went with a Big Green Egg of comparable size, you’d have to buy some, if not all, of these highly useful accessories after the fact (which could add as much as $500 or more to your purchase price).
When we talk in terms of Price to Value, this is the reason most people switch from the Big Green Egg to the Kamado Joe…
The fact is that Kamado Joe gives you more of what you really need in your kamado (particularly in terms of the ability to cook in a wider variety of ways out of the box without the need to retrofit anything).
Because of these factors, the winner of price to value is…
Winner: Kamado Joe
Who is the Overall Winner – Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe?
If you’re keeping score in our Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe 10 Head-to-Head Comparisons, it ends up as 5 wins for Kamado Joe, 2 for Big Green Egg, and 3 Ties.
Now as I’ve written about before, whether you purchase a Kamado Joe or a Big Green Egg, you’ll probably be happy. Both kamado’s are superior options in the world of kamado cooking. Over the years I’ve purchased both a Big Green Egg and a Kamado Joe and I do like them both, HOWEVER last year I ended up giving my Big Green Egg away to a neighbor and now cook exclusively on my Kamado Joe.
Why did I give away my Egg?
Because I just wasn’t using it as much as my Kamado Joe.
With all the innovations that are built in to the Kamado Joe it’s just an easier to use kamado.
That counts for something in my book. I got tired of fiddling around with retrofitting the Egg to make it work like a Kamado Joe.
I just want to cook and Kamado Joe allows me to cook on a kamado grill easier than a Big Green Egg does.
And with the amazing new innovations of the Kamado Joe III, there really is no longer any debate.
The Kamado Joe is the KING OF KAMADO GRILLS.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
