How to Get What You Want in Life, Sales, and even the Dog World?

The Power of Persistence

You can get what you want in life if you understand the Power of Persistence. Using the Power of Persistence is not hard — it starts with this simple formula:

ASK for what you want and don’t stop asking until you get it!

In this article we’ll discuss tips and strategies you can use to get what you want using examples from Sales, The Bible, and even the world of Dogs! We’ll also talk about the Right way to Ask and the importance of Persistence over time as the key to overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles. Ready? Let’s go!

Editor’s Note: Today’s lesson was inspired by our dog Bella, for reasons that will soon become abundantly clear. Here’s a picture of her.

Note how cute she is, BUT be careful, like many small dogs, Bella has no qualms about using her cuteness as a weapon to control you…

I. How to Get What You Want… in the Dog World

Bella is a Yorkshire Terrier who only weighs about six pounds, yet she rules our household – we call her ‘The Commander” because Bella basically gets whatever she wants.

Now, this is not to say that we just give in to Bella’s commands automatically – quite often we’ll tell her “No.” The problem (for us) is that Bella doesn’t really take “No” for an answer.

Bella understands the Power of Persistence.

In fact Bella is so good at being persistent and continuing to ask for what she wants that I have had no choice but to learn a Life Lesson by watching her over time.

For more than a decade I’ve observed Bella ask, ask, and ask again until she gets whatever it is that she wanted.

I’ve been so inspired by her that I’ve begun to employ Bella’s tactics in my own life (both at work and at home) – and guess, what, it works!

Now I want to share what I’ve learned about the Power of Persistence from Bella so that you can benefit too.

II. Learning How to Be Persistent – From Bella

As I said before Bella asks for what she wants. Therefore the first step towards getting what you want is opening your mouth and asking for it – after all, if people don’t know what you want because you haven’t told them, then how are they supposed to help you?

KEY POINT: If you have a need, ask for whatever it is you require to aid that need. If you don’t ask, the burden remains with you.

But what if they say ‘no?’

Ah, the dreaded team of ‘If’ and ‘They’ and their terrible weapon ‘No.’ I hate those guys!

Through most of my early life, I ran into the “If” and “They” brothers and out of fear that they might hurt me with their terrible ‘No” weapon I often found myself too afraid to ask.

As a result, I didn’t get a lot of things I may have wanted early on in life. You know what I’m talking about here…

  • A date with that hot girl in college with the killer eyes.
  • Closing the deal with a giant client who had multiple locations.
  • A better deal on a car loan.
  • Blah, blah, blah.

Yes indeed, If and They and the Fear of No made me miss out on all those things – and it sucked!

But eventually, I got tired of missing out and started to ‘ask’ – and lo and behold, it worked!

Not every time mind you (after all I was just a Junior-League Asker back then), but sometimes it did – and hey, even some of the time is better than none of the time, right?

So what changed?

I remember being inspired by two things – the movie Dead Poets Society and a quote from Wayne Gretzky. I’ll link to an article about the movie so you can read about it more there, but in the meantime, here’s the quote from The Great One…

Persistence

There is power in those words. Read them again…

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Or another way to say it for our purposes…

“You will NEVER get what you want if you do NOT ask.”

You’ve got to Ask. Plain and simple.

But what IF THEY say NO?

I’m glad you asked that question…again.

The fact is that during the course of our lives we are all going to be told “NO” many times over. It’s a guarantee as assured as Death and Taxes. You WILL be told ‘no’.’

But so what?

That doesn’t mean you have to accept the ‘No.”

That doesn’t mean you can’t ask again.

When we hear the word “No” we can either choose to accept it (which is what most people do) or we can reject it and keep asking for what we want.

Bella chooses to keep asking.

Bella is persistent.

Ask by Bella

As a result, Bella pretty much eventually always gets whatever she wants. (How can you resist those puppy dog eyes?)

I believe you should consider being more like Bella.

III. Getting to “Yes” In Sales

If you’re in sales  there’s a great line from the movie Boiler Room that drives home this lesson about the power of persistence…

“There is no such thing as a ‘no sale’ call. A sale is made on every call… Either you sell the client [the product] or he sells you a reason he can’t. Either way, a sale is made, the only question is who is gonna close? You or him?”

Are you gonna let the If and They brothers convince you to ‘buy’ their “No” or are you gonna be persistent and keep asking until you get the “Yes” you want?

You can’t have it both ways…

  • Either you accept the no and NOT get what you want;
  • Or you “Do a Bella” and ask, ask, and keep asking until you have your prize.

Which will it be?

IV. Ask – Because Jesus Said So!

I don’t know if you read The Bible or not and I’m not here to preach to you, but there is a lot of wisdom to be found inside this great book; one such example is from The Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 7, in which Jesus instructs his disciples to…

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

If you really want something, you have to ASK for it and if you get told “No” you have to KEEP ASKING.

Now I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you will always get what you want – the fact is that you probably don’t really NEED everything you are asking for and it’s probably a good thing that you do not get everything you ask for because then you’ll just end up spoiled (and yes Bella is spoiled and that’s not necessarily a good thing either but that’s beside the point!).

But, if there is something that you really want and if this certain something honestly would make your life better, then I recommend that you keep asking for it until you get it.

Don’t give up.

If it’s that’s important to you, persist until you get what you want – sooner or later you will.

If you’re into The Bible and you’d like to read more examples that illustrate this, check out the following examples of the Power of Persistence:

Note the common theme in all these stories.

  • There was a person who wanted something;
  • They asked for help;
  • They were all told “no” and/or ridiculed for asking;
  • Rather than give up, they displayed the power of persistence and kept asking;
  • ALL of them got what they wanted as a result of their persistence.

V. The Right Way to Ask

Whether you want to apply these tactics in the world of sales or just your everyday life, there’s a right way to go about asking and a wrong way.

How to Get What You Want – The WRONG Way

Ask, ask, ask until you get what you want. Tell the person who you want to help you why they have to give in to YOUR demands. Don’t worry about them or their needs, just keep talking about how YOUR life will be better as a result of getting this thing. Don’t stop until you get what you want regardless of whether it benefits the other person or not. You win.

How to Get What You Want – The RIGHT Way

Identify the person who can help you, but before you ask what you want of them, find out what you can do to help them.

Build a relationship with them (even if it’s just a one-time interaction like a retail sale in a tourist area, you can still build a friendly rapport together and this works wonders on sales success).

When it’s time for you to ask what you want (in this case the sale),  be sure to clearly explain what action you want them to do (buy something) AND also (and here’s the key part) be sure to help your new friend understands what’s in it for them too (for example, in the retail example, if the customer buys the new outfit they will look awesome at their beach party later).

When you practice Win-Win Asking like this, you both benefit because you both WANT to see the ask completed because everybody wins.

VI. Persistence Over Time

But what if you don’t get what you want right away?

You must be persistent over time.

Always remember this “God’s Delays Are Not God’s Denials” and that applies to what you ask of other people too.

Just because you get told ‘No’ today doesn’t mean you’ll get told “No” tomorrow, or next week, or next year. Life is fluid – it changes over time.

The same goes for people — don’t assume someone will keep saying “No,” just because they said it before.

This is especially critical for those of you in sales like me. Customers mind’s change — as time goes by your customer may be willing to say ‘Yes’ — BUT you’ll never know unless you keep asking.

Consider changing your perspective (remember that life lesson?), and think of it this way…

‘For every NO you get told, you’re now one step closer to getting a YES next time!’

I love reading and learning new tips. Here are some of my favorite books on the topic of sales and influencing people in a positive way…

VII. Get What You Want — TODAY

What’s the bottom line from our lesson today?

  • If you want something ask for it.
  • If you get told ‘no’ then keep asking and talk about what’s in it for everybody.
  • Don’t give up.
  • You’ll be amazed at how you start getting more of what you want.

Be like Bella and keep asking!

Be persistent!

You can do this.

Meanwhile, Bella will keep an eye out for you.

Bella Persistence

(I suggest you follow her advice. Lord knows you don’t want to argue with her!)

After the Miracle – Life Lessons from Jim Craig – Team USA’s 1980 Miracle on Ice Winning Goalie

What Happened AFTER the Miracle?

Do you believe in miracles?” If you know the story of the 1980 US Men’s Hockey team then of course you do. Whether you saw the movie or watched the actual game, the tale of how coach Herb Brooks took a bunch of no-name kids from the around the US and somehow guided them on a journey that saw them beat the heavily-favored Team USSR and later win Olympic Gold Medal is legendary.

Team USA faced a tall task as the Russian National Hockey Team was far more talented and had won the last 4 Olympic Gold Medals – by all rights the Soviets should have won the medal in 1980 too… but History had other plans. Despite being a mere 23 years old, Team USA Goalie Jim Craig somehow managed to stop 36 of 39 shots from the vaunted Russians, and with the help of teammates like Mike Eruzione and others, Craig and his mates created a true “Miracle on Ice.”

Memories of a Miracle

Just in case you need a little reminder, here’s a clip of the final minute the 1980 USA vs. USSR Hockey Game that features Al Michael’s legendary “Do you believe in Miracles?” sports casting.

Pretty cool, huh?
And yet that’s NOT what this article is about. Instead, let me ask you…

Do you know what happened to winning goalie Jim Craig AFTER the miracle?

Jim was just a kid when he helped Team USA defeat the Russians in the Olympics. And while that event was certainly a high point for him, life didn’t end for Jim with that game or the Gold Medal he and his team earned. In fact, life got a lot harder for Jim and his future wasn’t always filled with miracles – he suffered hardships and pain. Jim had to repeatedly reinvent himself in order to provide for his family and discover his legacy in life. Along the way he learned valuable wisdom that helped him overcome the obstacles he faced in life. That wisdom is now available to you.

Learning Jim Craig’s life lessons can help YOU achieve your dreams – in spite of the odds against you.

Editor’s Note: this article is part of our on-going series that features wisdom for living a “Legacy Life.” What you read here is some of the wisdom Jim Craig shared at a company meeting I attended recently – myself and others were blessed to be able to listen to Jim’s story. It inspired me so much I wanted to share it with YOU.

Life is Not All Miracles

As one of eight children in a lower-middle class family, Jim’s childhood wasn’t easy. Although his parents and family were tight-knit, hockey was a way out of the potential no-where path to a hard life in Boston. After losing his mother to lung cancer during high school, Jim’s dream was to play hockey at Boston University. Unfortunately he was rejected not just by BU but all the other major colleges too. Without many options, Jim had to take the junior college route in order to keep his dream alive of playing professional hockey – a dream that seemed a long way off.

Fortunately, it was at Massasoit College that Jim met a mentor who helped him advance his hockey skills and helped him network with people like Herb Brooks. After leading his JC team to a national championship, Jim was finally accepted to Boston University – and he led them to an NCAA National Championship too.

Things were looking good for Jim and his success as BU got him an invitation to join Brook’s Team USA squad as they prepared for the 1980 Olympics –unfortunately Jim he did nothing but ride the bench on Team USA – and once more his pro hockey dreams continued to fade.

Yet fortune smiled on Jim when Team USA’s older and more skilled goalie was repeatedly unable to get the job done during Olympic training and Jim finally earned a chance to play – Jim shined during his moment in the sun and secured his spot as the top goalie on Team USA for the 1980 Olympics — where (as you know) he helped create The Miracle on Ice.

However, after those Olympics, things turned south on Jim yet again.

Although he achieved his dream of getting drafted by the NHL and playing in the league, he suffered a rash of injuries and even had a cancer scare. Worse yet, in 1982, Jim was involved in a highway accident on a rain-slicked road that left one woman dead and another passenger critically injured and Jim was charged with vehicular homicide. Although he was found not guilty, the event was damaging to his psyche and his public image — at 25 Jim suddenly had to navigate through a storm of bad publicity and he became a pariah to NHL teams who didn’t want to deal with the baggage he dragged behind him.

Oft-injured and unable to shake his image, Jim’s professional hockey dreams continued to die. However Jim continued to persevere and after bouncing around to 3 NHL teams, Jim began to play well again and eventually found himself in line for a big-money contract – one that would have secured his family’s financial future and kept him in the league for years to come.

Unfortunately, on the very night he was slated to finally sign that long-term deal Jim suffered a career-ending injury!

Not only did Jim NOT get his big money deal, but he was forced him to retire. And so, after just 4 seasons, at 27 Jim was out of the league and his dreams of professional hockey were over. It was a bad break.

Worse yet, while this was happening to Jim, his fiance Sharlene was in the hospital dealing with her own health concerns. Thankfully she survived. Yet just a few years later Jim lost his father Don to cancer as well  – a man whose wisdom had carried him through his past hardships

With a new family and kids on the horizon, Jim had no job and no prospects. He was at a low point in life – yet with the help of two mentors he turned the challenges of youth into life lessons for others – eventually becoming an award-winning ad salesman and later a motivational speaker and the founder of Gold Medal Strategies

It wasn’t easy and it didn’t happen overnight, but Jim did succeed – against the odds he continued to build a lasting legacy.

Jim achieved his dreams by relying on tried and true wisdom. And YOU can achieve the same success – if you simply learn and apply this wisdom to your life.

The Wisdom of Jim Craig (and his father)

Here is the wisdom Jim Craig shared with my friends and I. Is some of it cliche? Perhaps. But does it work? Definitely! Put it to the test in your life and see the amazing things you can achieve.

Jim Craig on Dreams and Goals:

  • “You are what your dreams are.”
  • “You are the custodian of the legacy of your family – your legacy is made by you and those that came before you.”
  • “The common man goes nowhere.”
  • “If your dreams don’t scare you they’re not big enough.”

  • “Success happens when you believe you can win, you prepare, you focus on the process, and you execute the plan.”
  • “Either you are creating the future or you are part of the past.”
  • “Don’t let your memories be bigger than your dreams.”

Jim Craig on how friends and mentors can help you:

  • “If you don’t tell people what your dreams are, how can they help you?”
  • “Winning often comes from taking individual dreams and sharing it with others – this creates a sense of accountability and shared vision. It also gives you the help you need to make progress faster.”
  • “You can’t teach greatness, but you can recognize it and coach it to make it even better.”
  • “You are being evaluated every day, all the time – use it to your advantage.”
  • “Great teams accomplish more than great individuals.”

Jim Craig on the obstacles of life and doing the right thing.

  • “Anything epic is hard to do.”
  • “Choose the harder right over the easier wrong.”
  • “You can always recover from the truth.”
  • “You can’t lose integrity, you have to choose to give it up.”
  • “Be a victor not a victim – you always have a choice.”
  • “When you lose, you have a choice – you now understand what it will take to win so will you put in the effort required or give up and do something else?”
  • “Failure isn’t fatal, but fear of failure is.”

  • “Ask yourself – are you a passenger in life or a participant?”
  • “Push hard now or wish you did later.”
  • “You need to make the team every year – you can’t rest on your laurels.”
  • “Don’t just embrace change, create it.”
  • “Don’t just prepare, prepare to win!”
  • “If you wait till you’re comfortable to do what you’re capable of, you’ll never do it.”

YOU have a Dream & YOU have a Choice

If you’ve read this far that says something about you – most people would have given up by now but you did not. As a result, you’ve gained wisdom that others overlooked.

Recall that we’ve talked many times about the importance of wisdom – think back to the words of King Solomon in the Book of Proverbs 24:3-4 “By wisdom a house is built and through understanding it it established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”

The house that Solomon was discussing can be understood as a reference to your dreams. With wisdom such as that provided by Jim today, you can add to your knowledge and understanding, and with the help of mentors and friends, and hard work, you CAN achieve your dreams.

Will you give the effort it takes to succeed?

I hope you will.

Living the Legacy – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Auctions Treasured Championship Memorabilia to Help Children

Regular readers of this site know how often we talk about “Living a Legacy Life” – today we’re provided with a wonderful real-life story that will inspire you as Hall of Fame basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has announced that he’s auctioning off much of his treasured memorabilia in an effort to support children’s charities associated with education.

Read what Kareem had to say about WHY he’s doing it…

“When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all!”

What is Kareem Selling?

Kareem is selling his NBA championship rings — including those he won with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980, ’85, ’87 and ’88. He’s also selling very cool game-used and autographed items — including his All-Star rings and uniforms.

Why is Kareem Selling his stuff?

Unlike many other athletes who resort to selling their memorabilia because they need money, Kareem said he is financially secure and that he is not selling his rings, etc for the money personally. Instead, Kareem is focused on living a legacy life and for him that means helping children with educational opportunities. As such, much of the auction proceeds will go to support Kareem’s Skyhook Foundation – a charity that helps children learn about STEM education topics (science, technology, engineering and math).

As Kareem said, “Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future.”

No Winter Lasts Forever

Are you facing a time of trouble? Does it seem like life is going in the wrong direction? If so, then today’s life lesson is specifically for YOU.

Our wisdom today reminds us to keep in mind that…

“There is no winter that lasts forever; the spring will always come.”

Seasons Change

Think about this quote for a moment and allow it to sink in.

There’s a power in these words – they can help you CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE and realize that your life is filled with different ‘seasons.’ Sure it would be great to always be able to live in the ‘summer’ and enjoy life to its fullest every day without any cares in the world – but that’s obviously unrealistic. We all know that our lives are sure to have their fair share of ups and downs.

These are the seasons of our lives.

It’s only natural that we experience periods of growth (spring), plenty (summer), ebb (the fall), and challenge (winter). But always remember…

No season can last forever.

Once we accept this, we can allow ourselves to make the most of each season. We can better appreciate the good times and try to learn from the bad times.

Learn, Growth, Rebirth

If YOU are currently experiencing a winter season of despair, take heart, remember that nothing lasts forever…

There will be end to our sorrow and a time of rebirth and joy will come again with the spring.

Meanwhile, understand this as well – nobody said you have to just sit around and let your winter drag on and on while you do nothing and remain miserable.

  • Instead, try to take action yourself by endeavoring to learn from your current challenges.
  • Have you ever considered that there may be lessons that you can learn during your trying times?

The sooner you learn and grow, the sooner you can emerge from your winter and enter a new spring – a period when you can take what you learned from your winter and become an even better person.

Help Yourself, Help Others

Be sure to give this lesson a try in your life and if you have someone you know who could benefit from it, please share this lesson with them as well.

Final Thoughts: today’s lesson was inspired by a quote attributed to Hal Borland – the exact quote is “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn.” I first heard this quote over a decade ago. It helped me through some tough times back then and keeping it in mind has continued to help me over the years. I’ve since shared it with numerous friends. I hope that it can help you too.

Affirmations Work Best When you Combo them with other Weight Loss Programs

Let’s be clear – while affirmations are indeed powerful tools that really can help you deliver amazing results by harnessing the power of your mind to control your body, affirmations are not magic. If you eat poorly, don’t exercise, or don’t take care of yourself, then affirmations alone will probably not yield the weight loss results you are looking for.

HOWEVER, if you are using affirmations correctly and you make yourself believe that the affirmations are true, then over time, you will hardwire your mind into forcing your body to follow the path of the affirmations you are speaking to yourself. When this happens, then your mind and body will work together and look for ways to achieve your weight loss goals – you’ll likely find yourself wanting to eat healthier, wanting to put together a weight loss meal plan, wanting to get involved in a weight loss program, maybe even wanting to exercise more. All because you changed the way your mind thinks about your body image. Again I can tell you from first hand experience that this is true because it happened to me.

While I don’t count calories, use diet pills, or use weight loss calculators in my personal program, I can tell you that when I use affirmations for weight loss and I speak them to myself in the morning, they are particularly effective at helping me make a mind-body connection that keeps me on the right path during the way for my weight loss goals. In addition to affirmations I also use intermittent fasting and regular workouts, however I pretty much still eat what I want every day (and that includes chicken wings, beer, and BBQ on weekends!)

But my weight loss success all starts with affirmations because affirmations make me focus on eating right, help me stick to my intermittent fasting routine, encourage me to work out more often, and overall help me achieve positive results in my weight loss program.

Give them a try and see if they can do the same for you too.

Daily Affirmations & Positive Quotes that have the POWER to Transform YOUR Reality

Do you currently use positive affirmations and daily quotes as part of your daily routine? This type of positive self-talk is very powerful and, if used consistently can transform your reality. In this article, we’ll explore affirmations for a variety of life-changing motifs including affirmations for money, love, family, kids, weight loss, healing, anger management, parenting, confidence, law of attraction, gratitude, health, abundance, and more.

Ready? Lets go!

What is an Affirmation?

Dictionary.com has the formal definition of an affirmation as:

  1. “the act or an instance of affirming; state of being affirmed.
  2. the assertion that something exists or is true.
  3. something that is affirmed; a statement or proposition that is declared to be true.”

Personally I like definition #2 because I find it the most powerful version of the definition from the standpoint of someone who wants to use affirmations to make their life better.

When looking at affirmations from that mindset, I think an even easier definition of affirmations is:

An affirmation is positive self-talk that you believe is true.

When you use affirmations in the form of positive self-talk and you allow yourself to believe in the good things you say about yourself, it’s a fact that these positive words have the power to change your life in wonderful ways. Don’t take my word for it, see what both psychologists and the medical community has to say on the topic of using positive self-talk.

The bottom line – affirmations in the form of positive self talk works.

Affirmations Changed My Life

For the first 46 years of my life, I thought affirmations were kind of corny, but that changed in 2017 when I finally gave them a chance — and WOW, I can’t believe the results using affirmations and the law of attraction had in my life!

I went from generally having an overly critical, pessimistic view of the world to instead having a more positive outlook on life, my personal health, and financial abundance. I used affirmations to help ‘attract’ myself info the best shape I’ve been in since college, get a new job where I’m making more money than ever before, write a new book, start multiple new websites, and change my outlook on life. More importantly affirmations have helped me become a better husband and father, grow my spiritual connection to God, and just become a happier, more relaxed person.

If affirmations have done all this for me, imagine what they can do for YOU too!

How to Use Daily Affirmations & Positive Quotes

As with all the wisdom I share, it’s not rocket science. The way I use daily affirmations and positive self-talk is pretty simple — yet the results create tremendous personal power.

How to use Affirmations – a Simple Three Step Process

  1. First I write the daily affirmations I want to focus on as part of my “SMART” Morning Routine. I write THREE affirmations or positive quotes each morning and I use them to specifically focus myself on key areas that I believe will help me ‘win’ the day.
  2. Next, I incorporate some simple Breath Meditation into the process with my affirmations — I sit quietly, use my breath meditation, and repeat each positive affirmation or daily quote three times. I try to visual each affirmation in my mind’s eye — my goal is to see myself living the affirmation. At the same time, I try to get my mind, body, and soul (yes, all three) to encode what it feels like deep within my personal DNA, because I know that when I do this, the affirmation has a greater chance to become a reality. This is essentially the process of using the affirmation as a law of attraction
  3. Finally, because I know I want to use affirmations every day, I keep every affirmation and quote on a google doc that is connected to all my mobile devices. Throughout the day, when I have downtime, I refer back to the doc, remind myself of the affirmations and quotes and repeat them to myself numerous times during the day.

How to Eat Healthy on a Disney Cruise – DCL Insider Tips

If you are looking to learn more about how to eat healthy on a Disney Cruise, then you’ve come to the right place.

As a cruise veteran, I can tell you that while the temptation to indulge is always there and the opportunity is ever-present, there are ways to manage your cravings, have a great time, and still keep yourself in relatively good shape so you don’t come off the cruise as a blob.

In this article, I’ll share some of my ideas, give you links to learn more. I invite you to share YOUR ideas in the comments as well.

Look – I get it, when people think of food on cruises they often think of giant buffets that re forever swarmed by super-size-me crowds. With mountains of FREE food forever flowing in endless rows, the ability to consume “infinity” calories IS possible, and if that’s your goal then this article is NOT for you (you might prefer my other article ‘How to Eat your Way to an Early Grave.’ Haha, Just Kidding).

In all seriousness, I’m not here to preach to you, I simply wanna help you have a good time and do it in a healthy manner, and those 2 goals (having fun AND staying healthy) are not mutually exclusive – with just a little bit of ‘paying attention’ you can indulge, enjoy, and stay healthy.

3 Tips to Eat Healthy on a Disney Cruise

Tip 1 – Buffets are not all bad

Let’s get this out right up front – the buffets on a Disney Cruise are actually quite good and while it’s true that they are filled with numerous poor choices (fried foods, seafood covered in cream sauces, sodas, hi sugar ice cream, etc, etc), there are a lot of other good choices too.

For example, if you’re having breakfast at Cabanas, consider these ideas:

  • Smoked Salmon/Fish
  • Miso Soup (if you’ve never had soup for breakfast you are missing out, a good bowl of Miso Soup is an awesome start!)
  • Eggs + Bacon without the bread
  • Fresh Fruit Bowl – you’ll find mangos (like a super B12 shot), citrus wedges, melons, grapes, apples, bananas, etc.
  • Greek Yogurt Bar – make your own concoction
  • Ask your waiter or someone at the food counters for a handful of fresh spinach to add to your plate to much on for roughage
  • And so much

Any 1-3 combo of this would likely started you off on the right track with high protein, healthy fats, and low carbs.

Just be careful that you take your time eating and don’t go up more than twice.

One time would likely be ideal to keep you in the 300-500 range for calories. If you go twice, be sure you get a workout in to build some calories back off. If you go back to the buffet 3+ times, you’re heading into the ‘eat to infinity and beyond’ range and that’s not good even for Buzz Lightyear.

DCL Insiders Tips

If you like to practice Intermittent Fasting like me – get the early dinner seating so you’ll be done eating by 630-7pm.

The next day you can hit the gym for some “Fasting Cardio” before breakfast.

Finally stroll into one of the buffets around 10 am the next day and you’ll get 15+ hrs on your fast and still enjoy all the benefits of the Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle you are used to.

Tip 2 – Indulge “Consciously” at Dinner

Lots of DCL Insiders talk about one of the benefits of Disney Cruise restaurants is that the food is good (it is!), you can have as many servings as you want (you can!), you can order double-entrees (it’s true), etc, etc.

All this may be true, but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should or that if you do that you’ll feel good about it.

Instead, let’s try a different plan – consider the “Tapas” approach.

Let me explain.

Whether you are eating at Animator’s Palate, Enchanted Garden, Royal Palace, Palo, Remy, or any of the other great venues on a Disney Cruise, consider doing ‘family style’ meals.

  • Do all four of the appetizers on the menu look good? Great, so order them for the table – that way you can have 1 of each and the total calorie content will stay relatively low.
  • You want a soup and salad and 1-2 entrees? If the soup is creamed based, split it with your spouse. Then eat as much of that salad/roughage as you want because it will fill you up with healthy food (but careful on that creamy dressing – put that on the side and dip into it if you want to).
  • Regarding the entree – consider the fresh fish dishes (they are very good – so long as they are without creams), or varieties of lean meats (both the chicken and steak are good). Skip the fries. Skip the pasta. And skip the stuff you can have anytime at home. Pock something that sounds good but is healthy and lean. It’s not hard to eat healthy on a Disney Cruise with just a little effort.
  • You want more than 1 entree? – I’m sure more than 1 will look good and yes you CAN order multiple ones, but again let’s turn back to that Tapas Approach to manage this and increase our enjoyment: each of your party can order a different entree (or even 2) and have them be placed in the middle of the table. Then you can all enjoy a lot more variety and you’ll control what you eat.

DCL Insider’s Tip

Use the small bread plates for your eating plate – not only does this save space on the table, but it will force you to eat slower and savor the food more, then you’ll get a chance to control your portion size too.

How about that dessert?

Again let’s go the ‘sharing’ route – do you really need an entire sundae for yourself? Personally I find that 2-4 bites is enough for me of any dessert so rather than be locked into 1 dessert I like to sample a few bites of each one. If everybody orders a different one, you can try lots of different desserts. Try it, you’ll like it!

Tip 3 – Hit the Juice Bar at Senses Spa

The Senses Spa has a Juice Bar with lots of option.

From fresh-squeezed single juices, to juice creations, to fruit/veggie smoothies. For about $5, you can’t go wrong with one of these treats. And if you are post-workout, they have protein blends too. Bonus!

Don’t Forget the Workout

Bonus Tip

Eating Healthy on a Disney Cruise is not that hard with the tips we’ve talked about. And to take it to the next level, be sure to add in your workout too.

You can workout on a Disney Cruise in a variety of ways.

  • Hit the FREE Gym on the upper decks.
  • Take a swim in one of the many pools.
  • Play some hoops.
  • Take long swim on Castaway Cay or go snorkeling.
  • Or even just walk the decks of the ship.

Up for a challenge?

Try to walk from Aft to Forward on every level – play the Midship Detective Agency to break of the time if you like – then get a juice at Senses.

If you want a SUPER GOOFY Challenge – Start in the aft, bottom floor, walk the stars all the way to top, walk to midship, walk the stairs all the way down, walk to forward, walk the stairs all the way up – and again finish with a juice at Senses or maybe do the Rainforest Rain Spa).

Remember if you can stay in a ‘net’ caloric deficit or at least in balance, then you’ll maintain your weight – and that’s our goal, right?

Inspirational Quotes from Margaret Mead

Margaret Mead lived a Legacy Life.

Margaret Mead was an anthropologist… and a rebel. Quite a combination, huh?
She lived between 1901 and 1978 and worked as an American cultural anthropologist, author, and speaker. Renowned for her anthropology contributions, she was controversial for the way she expressed her views during the 1960’s sexual revolution.

Margaret Mead perservered in spite of those who trolled her at the time and she went on to build a lasting legacy. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter, has numerous schools named after her in the northeast, and was even featured on a US Postal Stamp in the late 1990’s.
