Advice: How to Accept and Give Good Advice

The first step towards gaining wisdom is to recognize the value of advice.

Our life lesson today comes to us from King Solomon who said “Listen to advice and accept instruction and in the end you will be wise” (Proverbs 19:20).

What This Means to YOU…

If you’re like me, you have people trying to give you advice every day.

Unfortunately, if you’re like me, that means you probably also find it difficult to listen to that advice!

If that’s true, it could mean you’re letting a great deal of knowledge just slip through your fingers and that’s a problem because it means you’re making your life harder than it needs to be.

Don’t let that happen to you – learn to accept advice and allow this wisdom to improve your life.

3 Ways to Use This Wisdom Today

  1. Recognize what could be stopping from you accepting advice.
  2. Understand how to recognize good advice from bad.
  3. Use this wisdom to help others.

I-Overcome Your Pride
Perhaps the biggest obstacle that keeps us from accepting advice is our own pride. There are many reasons for this — it could be that we feel like we should be able to figure things out for ourselves, or we foolishly believe our ideas are always better than anyone else’s, or we are embarrassed to ask for help because we don’t want to appear stupid, etc.

Regardless of the reason, the important thing to understand is that when you allow pride to stop you from listening to advice, you end up making your life more difficult than it needs to be because you limit yourself to only one solution source — you! The fact is that nobody knows everything and the sooner you and I realize that, the sooner we’ll know it’s foolish to let our pride stand in the way of gaining knowledge from others.

I know it’s hard, but the next time you find yourself in a situation that you know you could use help with, do yourself a favor, swallow your pride, and be open to letting someone help you.  You’ll be glad you did.

II-Recognize Good Advice
Now that I have you at least willing to listen to advice, let me throw you a curveball – not all advice is good advice and it’s important to have some guidelines for sifting out the good from the bad.

Perhaps the most important thing for you to do is to recognize the SOURCE of the advice – is the advice coming from someone who truly cares about you? If so, then it’s worth your while to at least listen. If not, move on. However, even if the advice is coming from a person you trust, that still doesn’t mean it’s going to help you.  You can recognize good advice by asking yourself a few questions.

Here are some examples…

  1. Is the person giving you advice qualified to provide it based on their own life experiences?
  2. Did the person listen to you and attempt to understand your situation before giving you advice?
  3. Does the advice give you realistic options that you feel motivated to pursue?
  4. Are you certain the person giving the advice is not just trying to take advantage of you?
  5. Does the advice still leave the final decision in your hands?
  6. Does the advice make sense and do you feel good about it in your gut?

These questions are just examples; I encourage you to develop ones that make sense to you — come up with a list of simple and easy to remember questions that you can ask yourself when you are presented with advice. If the advice provided overcomes these Challenge Questions then it’s probably worth listening to.

Remember this — just because you listen to someone’s advice doesn’t mean you necessarily have to follow it — the final decision on what to do remains with you.

One bonus of seeking that advice is that you’ll have more confidence when you do take action to tackle your problem because you’ll know you invested extra time to seek wisdom and that extra confidence could be the final key you need to overcome your obstacle.

III-Provide Good Advice to Others
Let’s face it, the world needs more people who are willing to help others. I encourage you to be one of them.

If you find yourself in a situation where you have the opportunity to give advice to someone else and you have the knowledge you believe could help them, then why not do it? You never know when your words could change or even save somebody’s life so don’t ignore helping someone if you can. That being said, it’s important that you give good advice not just any advice. But how?

For starters, you can apply the Challenge Questions from #2 above to yourself. In addition, you can use this simple formula: Listen First, Advise Second. After all, how can you give advice to someone if you don’t listen and understand their situation? Once you do that you’ll be in a position to know if you can truly help them. If you can, then give them your advice, but be sure to respect their right to accept it or not – understand your job is only to share wisdom, the final decision rests with them.

But what if you listen and realize that you can’t give them any helpful advice? That’s ok. You can still encourage them, pray with them, and perhaps point them towards someone else who can help them. It would be better to do this than to give them questionable advice because you are too proud or scared to admit you don’t know the answers either. Part of giving good advice is knowing your own limitations – recognize that and you’ll come full circle in understanding this lesson.

Don’t Wait, Use This Wisdom TODAY…

Pick a problem, any problem, then challenge yourself to ask someone you trust for advice.

How to Make Homemade Dog Food – Recipe and Tips

Homemade Dog Food – It’s Not Hard

If you’re like me, you love your pets like a member of the family. You want them to have only the best in their lives and that means you want them to have the best diet too, right? So why buy store bought dog food that sits on the shelves for months (and has who-knows-what ingredients inside) when you can make your own homemade dog food recipe with human-grade ingredients?

Hi, I’m Mike, AKA That Helpful Dad. I’ve been making homemade dog food for my pups for over a decade and I’m here to help you learn how to make it too. Cooking homemade dog food for your pets is easy, it’s fun, and it’s oh so good for them. In this article, I’ll show you one of my favorite recipes for homemade dog food.

Cooking for your dog is easier than you think!

One of the most popular vids I’ve put on YouTube over the years is a homemade dog food recipe  – it has over 400,000 views on YouTube and ranks in the top 5 on Google Search for Videos about homemade dog food – yet it’s a really just a simple vid about me doing something I love for my pets. Who knew?
I think the reason it’s been so popular is that this homemade dog food recipe is easy to make, chock full of healthy goodness for your dog, it’s super fresh, and yields positive results for your pet.

Homemade Dog Food Recipe

Ingredients:

  1. 2 fresh celery stalks
  2. 1/2 cup fresh carrots
  3. 1/2 cup frozen or fresh green peas
  4. 1/2 cup frozen or fresh chopped spinach
  5. 1 medium fresh sweet potato
  6. 2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
  7. 1 cup fresh lamb
  8. 1-2 fresh chicken breasts
  9. 1-4 cups non-salted chicken broth

Tools Needed:

  1. Large Cooking Pot. Lots of options for this but I use one by Rachel Ray. Here’s a link to the newest version of it on Amazon:
Rachael Ray Porcelain Enamel II Nonstick 8-Quart Covered Oval Pasta Pot with Pour Spout, Green Gradient
  2. Food Processor. Lots of options for this too. I use the tried and true Cuisinart. Here’s a link for that too.
Cuisinart DLC-10SY Pro Classic 7-Cup Food Processor, White

Steps

  1. Gather ingredients. Note that you may need to adjust the quantities for your ingredients based on the size of your pets. The recipe here is enough to feed 2 small Yorkies (6-8 lbs each), 1/2cup of food twice per day, for about 4 days.
  2. Heat 2T of EVOO in your pot
  3. Use your Food Processor to roughly chop all your vegetables (NOT the meat). You don’t need to liquify them, just chop them into ‘bite-size’ pieces appropriate for your pet.
  4. Put all vegetables and the raw meats into the pot.
  5. Add your chicken broth to the pot.
  6. Add enough water to cover the meats
  7. Put the pot on the stove and bring to a boil.
  8. Once it boils, turn down heat to medium and cook for 20-30 minutes or until the meats reach an internal temp of 165 degrees. If you want a good thermometer to check this, here’s the one I use:
ThermoPro TP03A Digital Food Cooking Thermometer Instant Read Meat Thermometer for Kitchen BBQ Grill Smoker
  9. After 20-30 minutes, remove your meats and use the food processor to chop the meat. Then return the meat to the pot – at this point, it should start to look like a stew.
  10. If you are going to serve immediately, be sure to let it cool first – maybe add an ice cube or two to your pet’s bowls.
  11. Refrigerate any unused portion. It should keep for 3-4 days in the fridge (OR) you can also freeze it for long-term use.
  12. Watch your pets go crazy for this food!

My Experience with Amazon Prime

I’ve been a prime member since the very beginning (2005) and an Amazon customer since 2002. If you’ve followed my blog, you know I’ve talked about Amazon Prime many times so I won’t rehash it all again but there are a few things I continually see people overlooking and I wanted to make sure that you know about them so you can get the full value for your Amazon Prime membership.

When most people think of Amazon Prime they just think of the free 2-day shipping and while that’s certainly a great benefit (if you order a lot of items), Amazon Prime gives you a lot more than just free shipping. You also get lots of free music, videos (tv/movies), books, and more. For the full list, visit this Amazon Prime Benefit Page. Again, we’ve talked about this already so I’m going to assume you know it and skip to the tips for today.

Get more out of Amazon Prime

1-Amazon Prime Visa Rewards

5% Cash-Back on the Amazon Prime Rewards Signature Visa Card – that’s 5% cash back on ALL Amazon.com purchases and also a Whole Foods too! You can’t beat that. Also, there is no annual fee. We order everything on Amazon using this card. It’s really a no-brainer. Click the pic of the card below to learn more…

Pro Tip: Get an even bigger discount when you combo your purchases on Amazon with the Prime Rewards Visa card this AND the Amazon Subscribe & Save program. The Subscribe and Save program saves you another 5-15% off of your regularly ordered items (think toilet paper, detergent, protein, etc) and now you are talking some serious savings! To learn more about the Subscribe and Save Program click on this pic…

2. The Amazon Warehouse

Shopping with Amazon Prime is simple and efficient and (for me) faster than going to the store, but do you know about the Amazon Warehouse?  If you don’t click this pic now and learn more…

Do yourself a favor and always check the Amazon Warehouse when you are shopping on Amazon! You can find a lot of ‘like new’ items (that still carry an Amazon warranty) for 25% off or more. This isn’t junk off-brands, it’s name-brand high-quality stuff. We’ve saved over a $1,000 by using Amazon Warehouse the last couple of years and rarely have we been dissatisfied with the quality (and if you then just send it back for a full refund without questions via UPS — which Amazon will send to you for free pickup at your door).

Here’s a video I made to help you…

Things I purchased on the warehouse include my entire home theater system (Yamaha receivers, speakers, etc) and all my zone-2 speakers (bedrooms, lanai, etc), kid’s bikes, home appliances, tools, and lots more. I almost hate telling you about this tip because I’m afraid you might steal my deals! Haha

3. Prime Music

Why pay for a subscription on Pandora or use other music apps when they are free on Prime Music? Click the following Amazon Link to learn more:

Again it’s just simpler. Plus it can be an interface to also play all the music on your phone too so it’s a one-stop shop for all your music. And just to be clear, while you can pay $7.99 month for the full version of Prime Music, you can use the standard version of Prime Music for free indefinitely (it’s already included in your Prime membership). Prime Music standard has all the artists I’ve ever been looking for, all their popular songs, and you can even download them to your phone. Seriously, it’s crazy good.

Pro Tip: Connect an Amazon Echo Dot with your stereo receiver’s Zone 2 and then use the Alexa app to stream music throughout your house, patio, and more.

This is so simple. I don’t know why more people don’t do this? Why would you buy an expensive system like Sonos, etc when (assuming you already have a receiver and you already have speakers throughout your house) you can just connect a $40 Echo Dot and stream music that way? It’s another no-brainer. Here’s a link to find the Echo Dot on Amazon now…

4. Prime Video

With lots of binge-worthy tv and a variety of free movies (with options to rent/buy new ones and have them stored on your Amazon account) and you’ve got entertainment largely covered. To learn more about Prime Video, click this link…

Pro Tip #1: Did you know you can order your favorite ‘channels’ (HBO, Showtime, etc) from inside the Amazon Prime network? That means you don’t have to go hunting for your channels back/forth on TV. They’re all in one place AND this makes the process of searching to find your favorite shows even easier too. To learn more about Amazon Channels, here’s a helpful link:

Pro Tip #2: with Amazon Video now streaming Thursday Night Football you can cut/reduce the cable bill because you don’t the NFL network. Here’s a link for that too…
Stream NFL on Amazon Video

5. Prime Photos

Prime Photos is still a bit raw but I’ve found Prime Photos to be an inexpensive way to order some prints and get them pretty quickly. Plus you can use it as another auto-backup for your pics and have another location to store them in.

Click here to learn more about Prime Photos.

Pro Tip: if you use the Amazon FireStick as your streaming resource you can set up a ScreenSaver that shows your Prime Photos via an automatic slideshow too – it’s pretty cool.

Foto Friday – Remembering Our Ancestors

As the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea draw to a close, it seemed appropriate that today’s Foto Friday would feature this pic. Do you know what it is? Do you know the critical life lesson associated with this pic?

Be sure to click the pic for the full effect!

These are paper lanterns and this pic was taken at the Seokguram Grotto in Gyeongju, South Korea. During my trip to the complex, I was told that the paper lanterns are a kind of prayer offering (perhaps similar to when Catholics light candles in a church?). There are many colors of paper lanterns (see below) but the white lanterns were separated from all the rest. When I asked why I was told that the white ones are specifically for ancestors who had passed away. I can’t verify 100% that this is correct, but it sounded plausible to me and it brings us to our wisdom for the day…

We Are All Ancestors

Perhaps the most important piece of wisdom I can ever give you is this…

You are going to die.

So am I. We all are. Death is the only certainty of Life. It might suck to hear that and I know it’s not fun to contemplate the end of your earthly existence, but the sooner you come to grips with that fact, the sooner you can appreciate the following:

    1. Our lives are but a breath.
    2. NOW is the time to ENJOY LIFE.
    3. Don’t Wait, Follow Your Passions today!
    4. Do Something Good Today – You May Not Get Another Chance.

When you think of the word ‘ancestor’ what comes to mind? For me, it’s the spirit of a relative who has passed from this world. I like to think that my ancestors are watching over me and have a desire to help me. (Hey, it fits with the whole ‘Be… Helpful’ theme of the site so that’s an added bonus!). But my question for you is, why wait till you are dead to act like a helpful ancestor? And why limit your help to only your family? Is there an opportunity for us to act like helpful ancestors to each other?

I believe the answer to that last question is “YES” and it’s really the premise of this website. I want to share wisdom with you that can help you live a better life right now – not a month or a year from now, but here, today. And I’m eager to hear your ideas too. Together I believe we can help each other. So I’m offering up a paper lantern for you too – but don’t worry, it won’t be white. 🙂

Editor’s Note: This article is part of a 3-part Foto Friday Series during the 2018 Winter Olympics focusing on South Korean culture. The other articles in the series were…

Kimchi Pots

Gyeongbokgung Palace

For more about Seokguram:

Seokguram (originally known as Seokbulsa) was reportedly established in 751 and there is a Buddhist temple on site. Since I have a pic of that (featuring more paper lanterns) you’re getting a Double Foto Friday. Woo Hoo!

Google Wifi Mesh Network – My Personal Experience

Summary: In a word the Google Wifi System is Fantastic!

This article is a review of my personal experience with the product.

Why you might want a mesh wifi system

Do you have wifi dead spots in some areas of your house? Do you suffer from the dreaded ‘buffering’ when streaming video? If you have these and other wifi frustrations then you should look into getting a wifi mesh – especially if you have a large house.

We has Fios high speed internet and our house is 3200sf inside and we have about 3000 more SF outside that we want to have covered by wifi in order to stream outdoor tvs, watch movies outside, listen to streaming music, etc. The problem is that even with wifi extenders, there’s always been a bit of a problem in the far reaches of the house and outside. As you know Verizon/Frontier is of little help for this or ANY issue so if you want better wifi coverage in the house you’re on your own to figure it out.

What are your Wifi Mesh Options?

Lots of companies make wifi mesh products: Google, Orbi, Linksys, TP-Link, AmpliFi, and more. After lots of analysis paralysis, comparing lots of options, and making spreadsheets, I narrowed it down to Google Wifi and Orbi. You can usually buy a wifi mesh with just one unit or in packs of three. For the size of our home (3k+ Sf and 2 floors) we needed a 3 pack.

Since I have a long history of using Google products and we’ve always been satisfied with them, and since the price for a 3-pack from Google was lower as well (Google $280 vs Orbi $300), we went the Google route. Yes, $300 is a bit of an outlay, but I’m telling you that this product is worth it. Also remember, if you don’t have a large home you might be able to get by with just a single unit (which run closer to $125/unit). Yes, it’s a shame we can’t get the service we are paying for from our internet service provider, but that’s life and the Google Wifi Mesh IS a solution that works.

How did Google Wifi Mesh Perform?

The setup could not have been easier — it was essentially plug-and-play.

The results were instant – great coverage everywhere!

We’re paying for 100/100 speeds from Frontier but prior to using the mesh, it was hard to get them at any distance away from the router. Now with the Google Wifi Mesh we’re consistently around 95/95 up/down speeds anywhere in the house. Streaming is now fast and instant – no more buffering!

The additional features of the system via the Google Wifi App for your phone are really EASY to use and offer great options. You can…

  • Prioritizing a device.
  • Use family mode to control kid’s devices.
  • Have a separate code for guests.
  • Running a network check to see if/where you may have problems.
  • You can even control other devices on the Google Home network if you add those as well (for example the Nest Therm, etc).

How to Buy Google Wifi

You can buy Google Wifi from lots of places: The Google Store, Best Buy, and more.

Here are a helpful link to find Google Wifi on Amazon:

What’s the Bottom Line?

The Google Wifi Mesh is a great price for getting wireless coverage for your entire house.

How to Add a Horizontal Line to WordPress Posts

Here’s a super simple quick tip if you are a WordPress.org or WordPress.com author and you want to add a horizontal line to break up your posts like this…

How to Add a Horizontal Line to WordPress Posts & Pages.

Here’s how.

Instead of using the Visual Editor to write the post, you’ll need to switch to the ‘Text” Editor. Notice the RED box on this pic. You’ll want to click on “Text” editor to change the view.

Once you switch the view it may look a bit funky because you’ll start seeing some of the code but that’s what you want. Then, to get the horizontal line you find the text location where you want to add the horizontal line (you may need to scroll up/down the page to find your desired spot) and then simply type the following on a new line…

“<hr />”

Just to be crystal clear, you type “<” then “hr” then “a space” then “/” then “>”. So that should be a total of 6 keystrokes.

Don’t worry, if you forget the space and just type “<hr/>” you’ll still get the line so I guess either way is ok but I was taught to do the space I that’s how I’m telling you too. 🙂

The concepts of building a “Legacy Life” to pass along your wisdom and/or creating “Now Moments” each day is something we’ve discussed on this site many times before and you’ll find numerous articles in the Wisdom library or the links below.

How You Spend Your Time Indicates Your Priorities

Today’s lesson is easy to understand but sometimes hard to put into action.

The questions are simple:

  • Are you satisfied with how you spend the majority of your time?
  • Does the time you spend each day accurately reflect the priorities you’ve set for yourself?
  • Are you spending time on your legacy life goals?

If the answer is ‘no’ it may be a good time to reevaluate things.

The first step towards living a life more focused on building your legacy is recognizing all the many things you do each and every day that are NOT serving any purpose towards your legacy goals.

If you keep a journal for a week and write down all the time you spend on non-Legacy goals vs Legacy goals, I’d wager you’ll be horrified to see how little time you spend on the life goals that are important to you. I’m not saying this has to be a dear diary journal or one focused on psychoanalysis – just keep it simple, as you go thru the day or at the end of the day, write down the big picture activities that you spent your time one and then review it at the end of the week. If the pictures isn’t good, then use the tips below to change things over time.

Time Waits for No One

Remember one of our prior discussions – there is no guarantee of tomorrow. The only thing we know for certain is that we are alive right now, in this moment.

If you spend all of your time on trying to get rich, or watching cat videos on Facebook, or doing any number of things that are time-suck activities NOT aligned with your true hopes and dreams in life then you are robbing yourself (and anyone else invested in that goal) of precious time.

Don’t let the sands in the hour glass of your life slip away from you.

Remember, unlike an hour glass, you can’t flip your life over and get more time because (unfortunately for us) regardless of how we use our time, we can never get it back.

Jesus taught his followers similar wisdom in Matthew 6:21 and Luke 12:34 when he said…

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I think it’s fair to say that for many of us, our desired treasures in life would include things like family, legacy life goals, being happy, etc.

Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to become ensnared by the cares of the world. When that happens we often find ourselves giving away our time to tasks that don’t directly support our legacy goals.

Worse yet, we don’t discover this problem until its too late.

Yes we all need to have money to eat and probably the biggest time-suck that impedes the time we have to spend on our legacy goals relates to the things we do to pursue income to provide for our families. By no means am I suggesting that you quit your job and spend all of your time on your legacy goals (although if you could, you may find yourself the happiest of all and I’d be your biggest admirer!), but sadly that option may not be realistic for most people. But what I am saying is this…

If you want to spend more time on your Legacy Life Goals then you that you need to be consciously aware of how you spend your time — especially if your free time is limited.

ACTION TIME:

Each day there are multiple decision points at which you can CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSE to take a break from your non-legacy tasks and spend a bit more time on your legacy goals. Identify just one decision point each day and you’ll identify 7 more legacy life opportunities each week!

4 Easy Tips to Spend More Time on Your Legacy Life Goals

This is the heart of the article. These are the EASY tips you can use today that will help you life a life more focused on your Legacy Life goals. Use 1 ore more of these tips each day and you’ll be amazed at how your progress on your goals skyrockets!

1- The Intra-Day Just Because

Got a minute to spare at work? Perhaps even an hour? Why not give a quick call to your spouse during a break to say ‘hello?’ Better yet could you meet for lunch?

The same goes if you have kids— could you go to your child’s school and spend lunchtime with them? Think of the happiness you could bring them with such a surprise.

Would any of these really impede your work-day? I’d wager not. But would they make you a winner at the game of life with your family? I’m betting so.

2- Don’t Just Be There, Be Present.

On the weekends, do you find yourself thinking about work while you’re with your family? If so, practice ‘being present’ (AKA totally focused) with whatever activity you are doing with your family.

If you are there-but-not-there then your family is going to know. When that happens it’s like making a mental error in baseball — you went through all the trouble of putting yourself in position to make a great play, but you end up flubbing it because you weren’t paying attention — as a result, you let your team down.

It sucks.

But you can avoid this and become an all-star if simply practice being present so that you can make the most of the precious (and limited) time you do have together.

Consider this — Jesus’ advice above could likely also be translated as ‘where your mind is, there your heart is also.’

Where is YOUR mind — on your legacy goals or somewhere else?

3- Manage Time-Suck with a Plan

Be mindful when things at work are running over-schedule. Pay attention when you know you are doing something that is wasting your time. It’s way too easy to burn an hour or two on things that don’t support your goals and before you know it any free time you had is gone.

I’m not saying you have to be a robot, but I would challenge you to ask yourself a couple questions.

  •  Is the time-suck activity you’re doing now something that can be deferred till tomorrow?
  • Do you really need to watch that cat video for the 10th time? Do you need to spend another hour sharing it and re-watching it with everyone you know?
  • Do you really need to reset your fantasy lineup…again? Does it really make a difference?

Look, I’m guilty of all of these just like you. I’m not trying to be preachy here. I’m simply trying to bring awareness to the issue so we can help each other.

Time-suck is a constant battle — but it’s one we can win if we become aware of it and use simple planning tactics to manage it.

Perhaps the easiest of all is simply to build ‘time-suck’ into your daily plan and compartmentalize it into that time-slot. This could satisfy your need to goof off so that you can better focus on your legacy life goals during the majority of the precious free time you do have. Taking it a step further you might employ some of the 80/20 principles to make better use of your time. Check out this easy to use time management cheat sheet…

4- Climb The Mountain Every Day

If you have specific legacy goals related to accomplishments (writing a book, learning a new language, becoming a better cook, etc), try this tip:

Build in some time EACH day to work on your goal and it will often propel your forward faster over the long term vs. if you just worked on it ‘when you have a lot of time to focus on it.’

The problem with deferring your legacy goals ‘until you have time’ is that all too often you never make time. Before you know it that all-important dream is 5 or 10 years old with little advancement.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

If you work a little bit on your goal each day, you CAN climb that mountain. Each day take at least one simple step on your legacy life goal — if nothing else you’ll keep that goal top of mind. A super easy way to do this is to build time for your legacy life goal into your morning routine — it can make a world of difference and will energize you to do more!

Here’s the Morning Routine I use – it’s based on the philosophies of Tim Ferris and Tony Robbins…

Most Important Tip of All

If you take away nothing else from this article know this…

If you don’t take action to control of how you spend your time, the world will do it for you.

The result is that you’ll likely end up spending a lot of your life on things that are not that important in the grand scheme of things and you’ll miss out on living your best life possible. Don’t let that happen to you.

  • KNOW what you want out of life.
  • Keep your Legacy Life goals always on your mind.
  • Consciously make decisions that allow you to spend your time pursuing YOUR goals — not someone else’s.

If you do these things, you’ll not only spend more of your precious time on your Legacy Life goals, you’ll also be happier and more fulfilled – because you’ll live a life that you know is making a difference. And when you do that, you’ll be contributing your verse to the great play of life!

Foto Friday Quiz – What Am I?

It’s Foto Friday again and today I’ve got a quiz to toss your way: do you know what this is a picture of?

I’ll be impressed if you can guess this one without any hints.

Go ahead, give it a try…

Need some help?

Here are a few hints:

  1. This pic was taken in the same country as last week’s Foto Friday.
  2. These pots are used to make a special kind of food.
  3. The food ferments in these pots – sometimes for months.
  4. The food product is often spicy.
  5. The food is considered a superfood – especially in certain Asian countries where it’s used as a condiment with almost every meal.
  6. The primary ingredients are cabbage and mix of garlic, salt, vinegar, chile peppers.
  7. Both the food and the country where this pic was taken begin with a “K.”

Think you know it?

And the answer is…
It’s a pic of Kimchi Pots!

How did you do on the quiz?
It was a tough one. If you got it, I”m impressed. If you missed it, try again next time.

Did you know?

Travel to Korea and you’ll see kimchi pots quite often. The pic above was taken during one of my visits to the ancient ‘palaces’ of Seoul, but here’s another pic that I snapped of some kimchi pots on the roof of an apartment building.

Koreans love their kimchi and I have to say that a good kimchi does wonders for the digestive system- spend a week in South Korea eating this stuff and you’ll feel energized and ready to take on the world. If you get the chance, try some good kimchi today — you’ll be glad you did!

Are You Willing to Make a Fool of Yourself…And Become a Master?

“The time came when the risk it took to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” Anais Nin

I think it’s fair to say that most people who want to achieve a goal understand that it takes hard work and effort, but in order to break free from the mold and achieve mastery level it takes something more: it takes a willingness to expose your work to the world — even if it means you risk making a fool of yourself.

The question is — are you willing to pay the price it takes to achieve such greatness?

I deliberately selected this pic because (personally) I can think of nothing more scary than dancing in public in front of a bunch of strangers. (Without a bit of liquid courage — I’d rather go in front of a firing squad!). And yet, it’s often these ‘moment of truths’ that make all the difference in life.

Flowers cannot bloom unless they are exposed to the sunlight.

Our work can never be discovered if we only keep it to ourselves. As creators we know this, and yet still we delay. Day after day. Month after month. Year after year. We KNOW that sooner or later we have to put ourselves and our work on display — whether that be dancing, writing, music, or whatever is our passion. If we don’t share it with the world we are wasting God’s precious gifts to us. And we tell ourselves “Someday I will. When the time is right. When the work is perfected. Definitely, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna do it and not care what others think. Yes, I’m gonna do it…someday.”

But that someday never comes. We keep delaying — it’s safer that way. Yet still the urge grows inside. Until, finally, at last — we decide it’s time to let the flower bloom. It’s time to show ourselves to the world — even if people think our flower isn’t all that beautiful, it no longer matters. All that matters is we are free. We are pursuing our destiny.

And it feels incredible.

The question is — what’s stopping YOU?

Here are four questions I often ask myself in order to make progress. Pondering them helps me change my mindset and the new perspective I gain makes me think about my creativity (and my life) differently. Perhaps they will help you too.

HONESTY — are you willing to be honest with yourself, even when it hurts? It’s easy to be aware of your strengths and work to build them further, but it takes courage to acknowledge your weaknesses — especially when they are painful — but unless you are willing to view yourself from all angles, you’ll be trapped by an illusion that limits your growth. This doesn’t mean you should spend all your time developing your weaknesses and not work on your strengths — on the contrary I’m a believer that you should have an 80/20 (or even 90/10) focus on ‘living your strengths.’ But you still need to be aware of your weaknesses — make sure there are not any limiting factors that could hamper your growth.

The Wacky Weed | Walter Lanz, 1946

In our flower example, if there’s a weed growing up right next to you, it would probably be a good idea to nip the weed in the bud (better yet pull that sucker out from the roots!) before it has a chance to strangle you!

2. EMBARRASSMENT — Are you willing to endure embarrassment in order to grow? Nobel prize winner George Bernard Shaw once said…

“I learned to speak as I learned to skate or cycle: by doggedly making a fool of myself until I got used to it.”

If you want to achieve greatness, you have to be willing to suffer through some awkward moments in front of other people. Do you have the courage to face such public embarrassment while you continue to practice, make mistakes, and keep trying? Most people like the security of sitting on the sidelines and laughing at other’s mistakes — that’s why most people don’t achieve greatness. They are the weeds of life. The weeds think they are strong. The weeds think the flowers are weak. The weeds are wrong.

A beautiful flower seems fragile to the weeds, but what the weeds don’t understand is that the ‘fragility’ of the flower is an integral part of its beauty. The willingness to pursue your craft in front of the whole world, by definition, makes you more fragile, and yet it’s the only way to bloom. Let the world SEE your beauty — and gain strength in the process.

3. CHILDLIKE — can you become like a little child — unafraid of failure and instead focused on getting what you want? Babies make mistakes like they are going out of style, yet they learn and keep trying because that’s all they know how to do.

Jesus reminded his disciples of the importance of humbling themselves and ‘becoming like little children.’ Accept the fact that you still have more to learn, and see the world with the open mind of a child. That change in perspective can open your mind to recognize new paths you never even knew existed before — and these are the paths to your destiny.

4. FRUSTRATION — are you willing to deal with a little frustration in order to grow? Flowers have to break through the soil to find the light — imagine how difficult that must be? In the same way, when you must break free of the crowd. But it’s not easy. When you first start learning a new skill, you might enjoy some early successes that will inspire you to keep going, but eventually you’ll hit a wall and feel like you’re going backwards. This is because the more you learn about your skill, the higher you begin to raise your standards — and soon what was good in the beginning is no longer good enough. Additionally, the more you learn, the more you become aware of your errors — recognizing things you often overlooked in the beginning because you didn’t know any better.

You’ll feel frustration, anger, and even a loss of self-esteem as you struggle to open the petals of your flower. You may even feel like quitting. But don’t give in to this temptation! Instead understand that these ups and downs are all part of the growth process. No mountain climb is just a straight line directly up the path — there are always some peaks and valleys on the path to greatness. In the same way, no flower goes from bud to bloom overnight — but if you keep pushing through the soil, you WILL bloom.

Now that you know, it’s time to grow

I’ll leave you with this quote and then send you on your way…

“Awareness is like sunlight over a dark well.”
Dan Millman
