In a move reminiscent of Michael Corleone killing off his former friends in The Godfather or Carole Baskins allegedly using a meat grinder to feed her husband to big cats in The Tiger King, Amazon’s decision to slash commission rates for its affiliate partners is both sad and shocking.
Does Amazon plan to feed it’s affiliates to tigers too?
Amazon’s move to cut its affliliate commission rates 50-80% is particularly distressing because it is occurring at a time during the Covid-19 crisis has caused many people in the world at be without a viable source of income – even though the same crisis has increased Amazon’s business and propelled the stock to all-time highs.
Amazon Affiliate Commission Changes
So what’s changed and why is it such a big deal?
Here is the commission structure that’s been in effect for some time prior to April 21, 2020…
Here is the new and much reduced commission structure after April 21, 2020…
Amazon Affiliate Commissions Rate Reduction – The Real World Math
Who cares about numbers and %’s? Well in this case numbers DO tell the whole story.
Let’s try an example – imagine you are a blogger who runs a cooking and recipe website and large part of your income comes from recommending and reviewing products from Amazon. You’re driving traffic from your site to Amazon and when people purchase products from Amazon that came from your links the Amazon Affiliate Agreement pays you a SMALL commission.
Over time, you find a way to carve out a faithful following of readers who enjoy your content and appreciate the value of your recommendations. In spite of the oversaturation of the blogger marketplace, against the odds, you manage to eek out a respectable living and after lots of hard work you’re up to a six-figure income.
You make blogging your full time gig and think the future looks bright. You’ve become a success story by creating a win-win-win relationship between your readers, Amazon, and yourself.
And then one day Amazon cuts your income by 50-80% – with just a week’s notice.
Oh and there’s a global pandemic going on so you can’t easily get another job or a new source of income.
That’s the sad reality of Amazon’s decision. It may well destroy your favorite bloggers and cause you to miss out on a lot of new content and recommendations that you’ve enjoyed in the past.
Is Amazon Allowed to Make Affiliate Commission Changes?
Bloggers and websites who sign up to become Amazon Affiliates agree to an Amazon Affiliates Commission Operating Agreement that essentially gives full control of the relationship to Amazon and the organization has always reserved the right to change it’s commission structure at its sole discretion. In fact Amazon has changed/reduced commission rates multiple times in the past – but never in such a crushing manner before.
I feel sorry for my fellow bloggers who are in this situation. Like much in life it’s not fair. And there’s not much anyone can do about it.
If we don’t like the Amazon program, nobody is forcing us to be a part of it.
The fact is that Amazon has every right to reduce their commission rates, but that doesn’t make it the right thing to do from a business ethics standpoint.
Sure Amazon is the online retailer of choice for most of the world and the Coronavirus lockdowns have caused more people than ever to make purchases from the e-commerce giant.
But what’s missing in the equation is that it was the blogging community and review websites who played a large part in driving web traffic to Amazon in such a manner that Amazon thrived – especially in the early days of the ecommerce giant. The decision to destroy the commission structure is thus a de facto slap in the face to the very people who helped make Amazon what it is today.
Amazon Affiliate Commissions Destroyed – So What’s Next?
Expect to see most of your favorite sites move away from recommending Amazon’s products and into other affiliate programs – especially if they rely on it as their main source of income.
Here at That Helpful Dad, we are Amazon Affiliates. In spite of the changes, we expect that relationship (and our other affiliate programs) to continue. Why? Because blogging is not our sole source of income and we don’t produce content solely seek profits. Not that there is anything wrong with having a revenue-producing blog. Heck, we’d love if that was true for us too, however it’s never worked out that way – mainly because blogging is just a side hobby for us.
At That Helpful Dad we blog for the fun of it. And we expect to continue to do so – providing you more ‘practical solutions for real life problems’ and ‘life lessons’ you can use to live your best life now. So worry not for us with this change.
But we DO feel for our peers – today is a sad day in the blogging world.
Don’t just take my word for it. Check out these other articles on the topic of Amazon affliate commissions being slashed.

Wood Fired Chicken Wings – The Video
Wood Fired Chicken Wings – The Recipe
You can use whatever chicken wings you like (I’m using Costco’s Party Wings in the vid) and you can cook your wood fired wings with any recipe flavor you like, but our recipe today features a flavor style of wings made popular by the restaurant Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza which is…
Rosemary Garlic Wings with Caramelized Onions
This recipe ideally uses a 3-Step Process
Marinate Wings 6-24 hours
Cook the Chicken Wings
Prepare the Caramelized Onions
I suppose the only ‘required’ step is #2 (cook the wings) and obviously if you are using a different flavor style than the Rosemary Garlic + Onions that would change Steps 1 & 2.
There are many versions of Anthony’s Coal Fired Wings online, here’s one I like best from Copykat.com and my recipe is a version of it. Thanks, @CopyKatRecipes!
Remember – these ingredients are PER POUND of wings so if you have more than 1 pound, increase the ingredients accordingly.
To make the marinade simply put all these ingredients in a small bowl and mix them up, or just toss it all in a gallon-size Ziploc bag and mix them in there.
Once the marinade is done, put your wings in the ziploc bag too, seal the bag, and then mix the wings around to get them coated with the marinade.
Once the wings are good and coated then put them in the fridge in that ziploc bag and let the marinade do it’s magic.
If you can leave the wings in for 24 hours that’s great, but if you’re in a pinch, any amount of time is better than nothing. In the recipe video I have here, I marinated my wings for 6 hours and they still came out with great flavor. Here’s what my wings looked like after I took them out of the fridge…(and BEFORE the cook)
Rosemary & Garlic Marinated Wings
Step 2: The Cook
DISCLAIMER – it should go without saying that you need to be careful when cooking on any grill and that’s true here too. PLEASE USE HAND PROTECTION. If you buy an Ooni, they’ll often throw in a pair of their Ooni Pizza Oven Gloves but there are many other good options too and even a pair of welding gloves would work great.
As I mentioned at the start, and as shown in the vid, I’m cooking my wood fired chicken wings on an Ooni Pro. I love my Ooni and I give it my full, honest endorsement that it’s an awesome addition to my outdoor kitchen.
Ooni Pro
That said, you can make this recipe in another outdoor oven like a brick oven or a kamado, or you can just do in in your regular oven too, but if you want that ‘coal-fired’ flavor try to use a wood-fired oven if you can.
After you have completed Step 1 – The Marinade, now it’s time to take the wings out of the fridge – I’d recommend you do this about 1 hour in advance of the cook. When you take them out of the fridge go ahead and throw a light coating of salt on them. If you don’t know about the amazing benefits of salt, you really need to read the book Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat (the Salt section alone will change your cooking life). For this part of the salt process, my friends and I like using Maldon Sea Salt flakes (the larger size will add a bit of crunch to the crisp on your finished wings).
For the Ooni Pro, I used a combo of lump charcoal for the base and then added wood chunks to increase the fire.
For the lump charcoal, like the Western Brand from Walmart of Kamado Joe Big Block
For the wood, I like the Weber Wood Chunks (in this case Apple & Hickory; Weber’s bag is a great price) or the Smoak Kiln Dried Cooking Wood (which is especially good for wood-fired pizza, but a bit more expensive). When you add wood, be sure to let any ‘white billowing smoke’ dissipate before you add your wings so you don’t over smoke them. Remember, this recipe is ‘wood-fired’ NOT smoked wings – if you want to cook smoked wings, a kamado or regular smoker would be better than a pizza oven, but that’s a whole different story. .
My next purchase though will be the Ooni Sizzler and Ooni Grizzler pan because the are cast iron pans that have removable handles (read: so you don’t burn your hands)!
Take the pan out after about 10 minutes and let it cool for a minute or so. Then put your wings on the pans (but not into the oven yet).
Get the oven temp up to 500-600 degrees
(On the Ooni Pro this should take about 15 minutes or so, with the main oven door ON).
If you are doing the Anthony’s Coal Fired Wings recipe, then WHILE YOU ARE GETTING OVEN UP TO TEMP, START STEP 3 – Caramelizing Onions (see Step 3 Below)
Now go ahead and put your wings into the oven
(On the Ooni Pro, keep the main oven door ON)
(On the Ooni Pro, I keep my wings near the front door and away from the main heat in the back so they will bake and not burn).
Let the wings cook on 1 side for about 10 minutes
If you have not already cracked open a beer, now is the time.
After 10 minutes take the wings out of the oven, flip them over, then put them back in for another 10 minutes or until you reach your desired temperature (165F or 75C is my goal).
(On the Ooni Pro, keep the main oven door ON)
(On the Ooni Pro, I still keep the wings near the front door)
(On the Oon Pro, you may need to add more wood to keep the temp at 500+, do so now).
After 20 minutes your wings should be at 165F/75C and crispy enough for most people. You can take them out of the oven and eat them now or if you are doing the Anthony’s Coal Fired Wings recipe add the onions you’ve had cooking (from Step 3 below).
Personally, I like my wings ‘well done’ so I put them back into the oven for another 5-10 minutes
(On the Ooni Pro, the coals & flames should be starting to die down so now I’ll move the wings to the rear of the oven so they can really crisp up without burning. I’ll also leave the main door OFF on the Ooni Pro for this step so I can monitor and make sure they are not burning.
Once you have the wings where you like from an internal temp (165F/75C) and skin crispiness standpoint, you can take them out of the oven and eat them now or if you are doing the Anthony’s Coal Fired Wings recipe add the onions you cooked from Step 3 (below)
Here’s what your wings should look like…
Wood Fired Wings 🙂
STEP 3: The Onions
This step is only for those who are doing the Anthony’s Coal Fired Wings recipe and want to add Caramelized Onions on top.
**YOU SHOULD BE DOING THIS WHILE YOUR WINGS ARE COOKING. I like to do this step while my oven is preheating.
Notes: fresh grind the pepper – I like Simply Organics or McCormick’s here)
How I made caramelized onions in the video…
While slicing the onions, heat your EVOO In a small sauté pan over medium heat.
Add onions, salt and pepper.
Cook the onions over low heat for 20-30 minutes
You’ll know their done when the onions are golden brown.
Your onions should be done (aka. “caramelized”) by the time your wings are done, and if so, you can simply add your onions over the top of your wings after you plate the wings on your serving dish.
Garnish with a little fresh parsley and you’ve got a winner!
You can see my finished wings below in “The Results” section…

Are you considering buying a larger computer monitor? If so, you’re probably looking at Gaming Monitors of 24 Inches or more and perhaps you’re wondering – can I use a Gaming Monitor for work or is that overkill? If you find yourself in this situation, I’m here to help! In this article, I’ll tell you…

Best Gaming Monitor – TLDR
TLDR? In a hurry? Just want to know what Gaming Monitor I bought?
After all my research I chose the ASUS Rog Strix Curved 27″ Gaming Monitor – read the article to see what else I considered and why or check out my recommendation by clicking on the pic below…
Why Choose a Larger Computer Monitor?
When I decided I wanted to try a larger computer monitor I looked into moving from a standard size monitor (12-19 inches) to a larger monitor (24 inches or more). I did a bit of research on the pro’s and con’s of using a larger monitor (see links below) and continued to find myself with recommendations to buy a “Gaming Monitor” as the best option for my situation. Once I made the decision to go with a gaming monitor I considered a number of top-rated choices (all noted below).
Before we look at my list of the best gaming monitors, you may want to know the reasons why you’d want to upgrade to larger monitor in the first place, and then why you should choose a gaming monitor specifically.
The benefits of using a larger pc monitor (24 inches or more) are numerous, but the most cited reasons are:
Larger monitors provide more productivity;
Larger monitors are easier to view (less eye strain),
Larger monitors now have more affordable pricing so that more people can buy them without breaking the bank.
Personally, I work a lot with spreadsheets and multiple windows but standard size monitors (12-19 inches) just don’t provide enough screen space to do any meaningful work with multiple windows. A bigger monitor gives me more ‘screen real estate’ to work with.
Here are some examples.
The #1 benefit of having a larger monitor is the extra space results in greater productivity.
Don’t just take my word for it on why you might want a larger monitor. Here are some helpful articles I read that convinced me to move to a bigger screen…
So why choose a Gaming Monitor vs Regular Monitor?
There are lots of articles on the internet about the differences of gaming monitors vs regular monitors including excellent posts by GamingGeekInnovation.com, and NewEgg.com, and these talk about technical aspescts like Refresh Rates, Resolutions, Inputs, Connectivity, and yada, yada, yada.
If you’re an Average Joe like me, the main thing to know is that Gaming Monitors not only offer more space (like other larger computer monitors) but also offer fantastic picture quality for watching movies, doing your work, and well playing games too! Best of all, because technology has advanced so much and prices have come down with competition, we as the consumer can now get high-end gaming monitors for a low cost. So if you’re gonna buy a larger monitor, then you might as well get a gaming monitor because it gives you all the features you might want (and more).
Gaming Monitors offer the best value for your dollar in the Large Computer Monitor Category.
INVESTING: I can have multiple online trading windows open

Best Gaming Monitors to Consider
Now that you know you want a gaming monitor for work (and play), you’ll want to know which gaming monitor to buy, right?
I did lots of research on the best gaming monitors and read thru articles by TechRadar, PC Mag, WireCutter, Digital Trends, and more. Eventually I narrowed top gaming monitor choices down to 24-27″ range (given the size of my desk I felt this size was perfect) and the following categories
Best Full HD Gaming Monitors (1080P or better) 24-27 Inches AND under $500
Why did I choose the ASUS Rog Strix 27″ Curved Monitor?
Since this was my first larger monitor and I don’t do high-end gaming where ultra fast refresh rates are the difference between life and death, I didn’t necessarily wanna drop a grand on a gaming monitor just yet. When I did my research and really narrowed down what I wanted (the best combo of screen space for a reasonable amount of money) I came down to the Alienware 25 and the ASUS Rog Strix 27. In the end the ASUS Rog Strix 27 just felt right – it has more consistent reviews, I liked the curved option, and I liked the warranty.
I’ve owned the ASUS Rog Strix 27 Inch monitor for nearly a year now and it’s met all my expectations!
