Adult Dog Training: Everything You Need to Know

Dogs are the most beautiful creation on earth; we people find a companion in them. Dogs hit in the first position when it comes to trust and loyalty. And that’s why humans prefer dogs as pets rather than any other animal. However, most people prefer to adopt a puppy instead of a large or adult dog. It is so because they think that puppies are more comfortable to train. But the reality is that dogs can learn at any age. Adult dogs are relatively easier to train than young puppies because they are more self-controlled, and also it is essential to train dogs as they grow into adults.

Dog training is necessary whether the dog is small, medium, or large. Training the dog improves not only their behavior but also their relationship with you. Training your canine will tell them what they can do and what not, what action is right or wrong. Dog training includes teaching them some common commands, such as to sit, up, down, and training them for their regular activities. In this article, we will discuss the steps to teach an adult canine. So, let us discuss how to train your adult dog-

Preparing the dog for training-

  • Get some of your dog’s favorite treats-

Take a handful of treats for your canine, which you can give whenever it learns and responds to your training. Some dog breeds, such as Labradors and Beagles, are food orientated, so you need to keep aside some part of their daily kibble, which you can use as a reward. These treats are used as rewards that will encourage your canine.

  • Select an environment with few distractions, such as your backyard-

While training, you need to make sure that your dog listens to you instead of just watching you. Also, you need to ensure that you don’t have any toys around you, at least for the time you are training. When you are not sure about your canine’s response during the early stages of training, keep your dog on a leash.

Once your dog has learned some basic commands like sit, stay, and heel now, you can continue the training with distractions. Teaching with distractions will help your canine to understand that you expect to react to the dog in all situations and not only in the backyard.

  • To begin with, keep your training session short-

A typical dog training program needs two daily sessions of 15 to 20 minutes each. Also, emphasize commands by asking the dog to ‘sit’ before meals or ‘stay.’

As we humans have different personalities, so do the dogs have. This means some breeds are more trainable, attentive, and have more concentration powers. Species are German shepherd, Labradors, and Border collies are the dogs initially bred as hunting dogs.

  • Be sensible about the speed of progress-

Although you can teach new tricks to old dogs, it can take quite along. Do not expect an adult dog to learn things quickly, as a young puppy knows during socialization. If the dog is taking a much longer time to get trained, do not get discouraged. Stay focused, and be calm with your dog.

Deciding on what type of training method you want to use-

  • Using a reward-based training method-

Some dog training methods favor the dominance of the dog, and while it is good to be the leader of your canine while training. The training should be based on encouragement rather than harsh training. The principle of reward-based practice works on rewarding good behavior so that the dog will repeat it to get the treat. It would also help if you ignored the destructive behavior so that the dog will understand that bad behavior will not be rewarded, so he needs to stop it.

  • Learn to use the clicker training method-

Clicker training focuses on teaching a dog to associate with the click-clack of the clicker with a reward or treat. The benefit of clicker is that you can precisely aim the desired behavior in a way that is too difficult to do otherwise.

  • Never shout or hit your dog while training-

Always remember that shouting or scolding never has a place in dog training. If you scold or shout at your canine, it will throw a negative impact and will also affect your bonding with your four-legged buddy.

Teaching the basic commands-

  • Start by training the ‘sit’ command-

Teaching your canine, the ‘sit’ command will place you in control of a whole variety of solutions. Let’s say if your dog hears the doorbell and runs to bark, you can stop this behavior by asking it to sit and then rewarding it. To teach the sit command, first show the dog that you have a treat in your hand. Get the pleasure at the dog’s nose level and then take it up from the nose. Now say ‘sit,’ your canine will follow the treat, letting its head go up, and it’s bottom to go down.

Once your dog does this, regularly start skipping the treat, which will make the dog make up their mind about whether he or she gets the reward or not; they need to follow the command. Like the ‘sit’ command, you can train your dog to follow the ‘stay’ command.

  • Train your dog to go for the bathroom outside-

Even if you have an adult dog, if the dog is not adequately trained, you need to start from the basics. A dog usually needs to go out twice a day, needs plenty of exercises. Initially, it would be best if you took him out every hour, and when he squats or relieves himself, say the words ‘potty’ or ‘toilet,’ and when he is done, give him a big reward.

Conclusion:

While training an adult dog, you must remember one thing that you are preparing a dog who already has a lifetime of experience. However, training dogs is an on-going process, and also teaching a dog is not dependent on their ages. A dog can learn anything at any age. Before training an adult dog, it is always better to consider a vet and get the dog checked for any medical condition. This will let you get aware of any limitations with the dog.

Advice for Dog Owners: Costs, Responsibilities, & Pet Insurance Options

Getting a dog is a big deal – this cuddly ball of fur will quickly become a beloved member of the family. Before you make the leap to dog ownership, though, make sure you’ve thoroughly planned for the financial responsibilities of giving your pet a good home. You’ll need to make sure you have enough money to provide your pet with food, health care, training if needed, and insurance.

Responsibilities of a Dog Owner

Dogs need plenty of love, but animals can’t survive on only that. They’ll need much more, and as their owner, it’s your job to supply everything they need to grow and thrive.

You may be surprised at how much your dog eats and how much top-quality dog food can cost. You’ll also need to consider grooming, and if you have a puppy or an untrained dog, you might want to have them trained. If you don’t have the money to hire a trainer, you can do it yourself by reading articles and being willing to put the time and effort into it.

Your dog will have to be walked – they need plenty of exercise. You must have your pet on a sturdy leash in public places and take supplies with you to clean up after them when they need to relieve themselves.

For a nice article on pet exercise, check out “How to Choose the best exercise for your dog” from our friends at YourDogAdvisor.

You might also want to give your dog some toys. That can provide a lot of entertainment for both you and your dog.

The Basic Costs of Owning a Dog

Wondering how much pet ownership will cost you? It’s more than simply paying for their food, so you’re wise to consider money ahead of time. It shows you’re willing to put in the effort to be a responsible pet owner.

Some of the things you’ll have to pay for may include dog walking, collars, leashes, beds, food, treats, medical care, etc.

Let’s look at four of the basic costs in more detail:

  • Medical care preventatives: This varies quite a bit depending upon your dog’s health and conditions. It’s important for dog owners to recognize the differences in policy coverage restrictions before selecting the best pet insurance. The average starting premiums for dog insurance coverage is roughly $32.
  • Food: This is going to depend upon how energetic your dog is, the quality of food, and what size your dog is. Generally, you can expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $60 per month for one dog. Food cost can be as much as $100 per month if they require certain diets.
  • Grooming: Dog grooming will vary in price depending upon your location, the scope of the grooming, and the size of the dog. Typically, you can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $90 per session.
  • Dog walking: If you can’t do it yourself, you’ll have to hire someone. Depending upon where you live, expect to pay $10 to $30 dollars for a half hour of walking. A daily walk could add up to $70 to $210 on your budget per month.

Here’s a good infographic on this topic…

Pet Insurance Costs and Coverages

Pet insurance is optional, but with the rising cost of veterinary care, it may pay off big time. Not only will It help protect your dog, but it will also guard your wallet.

Basic Costs of Pet Insurance

Pet insurance works primarily like your own healthcare plan. You’ll pay a monthly premium, which will cover certain things under the plan. For moderate coverage, you should expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $60 a month. To get the best plan available, for certain breeds, you may pay as much as $100 per month.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Usually, things like annual wellness checks, screenings, and preventatives are included, but it will depend on your plan and the company you buy insurance through.

pet insurance

Types of Pet Insurance

You’ll commonly see companies offering different types of pet insurance plans. Some common ones are:

  • Wellness plans: Wellness plans cover things like annual exams, vaccinations, heartworm prevention, flea control, and more.
  • Accident and illness: You might see this one referred to as a comprehensive plan because it’s your most complete and expensive option. It covers accidents, like bone breaks, and illness like infections or cancer. Though it won’t cover pre-existing conditions.
  • Accident only: This coverage won’t cover illnesses but will cover accidents such as bites from other dogs, accidental poisoning, or injuries from car accidents.

Bottom Line

Before becoming a pet owner, you should take a look at your budget and time. While you don’t need to spoil your dog, you should provide them with their basic needs and properly budget for pet ownership.

How to Get What You Want in Life, Sales, and even the Dog World?

    The Power of Persistence

You can get what you want in life if you understand the Power of Persistence. Using the Power of Persistence is not hard — it starts with this simple formula:

ASK for what you want and don’t stop asking until you get it!

In this article we’ll discuss tips and strategies you can use to get what you want using examples from Sales, The Bible, and even the world of Dogs! We’ll also talk about the Right way to Ask and the importance of Persistence over time as the key to overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles. Ready? Let’s go!

Editor’s Note: Today’s lesson was inspired by our dog Bella, for reasons that will soon become abundantly clear. Here’s a picture of her.

Note how cute she is, BUT be careful, like many small dogs, Bella has no qualms about using her cuteness as a weapon to control you…

    I. How to Get What You Want… in the Dog World

Bella is a Yorkshire Terrier who only weighs about six pounds, yet she rules our household – we call her ‘The Commander” because Bella basically gets whatever she wants.

Now, this is not to say that we just give in to Bella’s commands automatically – quite often we’ll tell her “No.” The problem (for us) is that Bella doesn’t really take “No” for an answer.

Bella understands the Power of Persistence.

In fact Bella is so good at being persistent and continuing to ask for what she wants that I have had no choice but to learn a Life Lesson by watching her over time.

For more than a decade I’ve observed Bella ask, ask, and ask again until she gets whatever it is that she wanted.

I’ve been so inspired by her that I’ve begun to employ Bella’s tactics in my own life (both at work and at home) – and guess, what, it works!

Now I want to share what I’ve learned about the Power of Persistence from Bella so that you can benefit too.

II. Learning How to Be Persistent – From Bella

As I said before Bella asks for what she wants. Therefore the first step towards getting what you want is opening your mouth and asking for it – after all, if people don’t know what you want because you haven’t told them, then how are they supposed to help you?

KEY POINT: If you have a need, ask for whatever it is you require to aid that need. If you don’t ask, the burden remains with you.

But what if they say ‘no?’

Ah, the dreaded team of ‘If’ and ‘They’ and their terrible weapon ‘No.’ I hate those guys!

Through most of my early life, I ran into the “If” and “They” brothers and out of fear that they might hurt me with their terrible ‘No” weapon I often found myself too afraid to ask.

As a result, I didn’t get a lot of things I may have wanted early on in life. You know what I’m talking about here…

    • A date with that hot girl in college with the killer eyes.
    • Closing the deal with a giant client who had multiple locations.
    • A better deal on a car loan.
    • Blah, blah, blah.

Yes indeed, If and They and the Fear of No made me miss out on all those things – and it sucked!

But eventually, I got tired of missing out and started to ‘ask’ – and lo and behold, it worked!

Not every time mind you (after all I was just a Junior-League Asker back then), but sometimes it did – and hey, even some of the time is better than none of the time, right?

    So what changed?

I remember being inspired by two things – the movie Dead Poets Society and a quote from Wayne Gretzky. I’ll link to an article about the movie so you can read about it more there, but in the meantime, here’s the quote from The Great One…

    Persistence

There is power in those words. Read them again…

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Or another way to say it for our purposes…

“You will NEVER get what you want if you do NOT ask.”

You’ve got to Ask. Plain and simple.

But what IF THEY say NO?

I’m glad you asked that question…again.

The fact is that during the course of our lives we are all going to be told “NO” many times over. It’s a guarantee as assured as Death and Taxes. You WILL be told ‘no’.’

    But so what?

That doesn’t mean you have to accept the ‘No.”

That doesn’t mean you can’t ask again.

When we hear the word “No” we can either choose to accept it (which is what most people do) or we can reject it and keep asking for what we want.

    Bella chooses to keep asking.

    Bella is persistent.

    Ask by Bella

As a result, Bella pretty much eventually always gets whatever she wants. (How can you resist those puppy dog eyes?)

I believe you should consider being more like Bella.

III. Getting to “Yes” In Sales

If you’re in sales  there’s a great line from the movie Boiler Room that drives home this lesson about the power of persistence…

“There is no such thing as a ‘no sale’ call. A sale is made on every call… Either you sell the client [the product] or he sells you a reason he can’t. Either way, a sale is made, the only question is who is gonna close? You or him?”

Are you gonna let the If and They brothers convince you to ‘buy’ their “No” or are you gonna be persistent and keep asking until you get the “Yes” you want?

You can’t have it both ways…

    • Either you accept the no and NOT get what you want;
    • Or you “Do a Bella” and ask, ask, and keep asking until you have your prize.

    Which will it be?

IV. Ask – Because Jesus Said So!

I don’t know if you read The Bible or not and I’m not here to preach to you, but there is a lot of wisdom to be found inside this great book; one such example is from The Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 7, in which Jesus instructs his disciples to…

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

If you really want something, you have to ASK for it and if you get told “No” you have to KEEP ASKING.

Now I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you will always get what you want – the fact is that you probably don’t really NEED everything you are asking for and it’s probably a good thing that you do not get everything you ask for because then you’ll just end up spoiled (and yes Bella is spoiled and that’s not necessarily a good thing either but that’s beside the point!).

But, if there is something that you really want and if this certain something honestly would make your life better, then I recommend that you keep asking for it until you get it.

    Don’t give up.

If it’s that’s important to you, persist until you get what you want – sooner or later you will.

If you’re into The Bible and you’d like to read more examples that illustrate this, check out the following examples of the Power of Persistence:

Note the common theme in all these stories.

    • There was a person who wanted something;
    • They asked for help;
    • They were all told “no” and/or ridiculed for asking;
    • Rather than give up, they displayed the power of persistence and kept asking;
    • ALL of them got what they wanted as a result of their persistence.

    V. The Right Way to Ask

Whether you want to apply these tactics in the world of sales or just your everyday life, there’s a right way to go about asking and a wrong way.

How to Get What You Want – The WRONG Way

Ask, ask, ask until you get what you want. Tell the person who you want to help you why they have to give in to YOUR demands. Don’t worry about them or their needs, just keep talking about how YOUR life will be better as a result of getting this thing. Don’t stop until you get what you want regardless of whether it benefits the other person or not. You win.

How to Get What You Want – The RIGHT Way

Identify the person who can help you, but before you ask what you want of them, find out what you can do to help them.

Build a relationship with them (even if it’s just a one-time interaction like a retail sale in a tourist area, you can still build a friendly rapport together and this works wonders on sales success).

When it’s time for you to ask what you want (in this case the sale),  be sure to clearly explain what action you want them to do (buy something) AND also (and here’s the key part) be sure to help your new friend understands what’s in it for them too (for example, in the retail example, if the customer buys the new outfit they will look awesome at their beach party later).

When you practice Win-Win Asking like this, you both benefit because you both WANT to see the ask completed because everybody wins.

    VI. Persistence Over Time

But what if you don’t get what you want right away?

You must be persistent over time.

Always remember this “God’s Delays Are Not God’s Denials” and that applies to what you ask of other people too.

Just because you get told ‘No’ today doesn’t mean you’ll get told “No” tomorrow, or next week, or next year. Life is fluid – it changes over time.

The same goes for people — don’t assume someone will keep saying “No,” just because they said it before.

This is especially critical for those of you in sales like me. Customers mind’s change — as time goes by your customer may be willing to say ‘Yes’ — BUT you’ll never know unless you keep asking.

Consider changing your perspective (remember that life lesson?), and think of it this way…

‘For every NO you get told, you’re now one step closer to getting a YES next time!’

I love reading and learning new tips. Here are some of my favorite books on the topic of sales and influencing people in a positive way…

    [amazon box = “0785264817”][amazon box = “1885167601”][amazon box = “1439167346”]

VII. Get What You Want — TODAY

What’s the bottom line from our lesson today?

    • If you want something ask for it.
    • If you get told ‘no’ then keep asking and talk about what’s in it for everybody.
    • Don’t give up.
    • You’ll be amazed at how you start getting more of what you want.

Be like Bella and keep asking!

    Be persistent!

    You can do this.

Meanwhile, Bella will keep an eye out for you.

    Bella Persistence

(I suggest you follow her advice. Lord knows you don’t want to argue with her!)

    Homemade Dog Food Recipe

    Ingredients:

    1. 2 fresh celery stalks
    2. 1/2 cup fresh carrots
    3. 1/2 cup frozen or fresh green peas
    4. 1/2 cup frozen or fresh chopped spinach
    5. 1 medium fresh sweet potato
    6. 2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
    7. 1 cup fresh lamb
    8. 1-2 fresh chicken breasts
    9. 1-4 cups non-salted chicken broth

    Tools Needed:

    1. Large Cooking Pot. Lots of options for this but I use one by Rachel Ray. Here’s a link to the newest version of it on Amazon:
Rachael Ray Porcelain Enamel II Nonstick 8-Quart Covered Oval Pasta Pot with Pour Spout, Green Gradient
    2. Food Processor. Lots of options for this too. I use the tried and true Cuisinart. Here’s a link for that too.
Cuisinart DLC-10SY Pro Classic 7-Cup Food Processor, White

    Steps

    1. Gather ingredients. Note that you may need to adjust the quantities for your ingredients based on the size of your pets. The recipe here is enough to feed 2 small Yorkies (6-8 lbs each), 1/2cup of food twice per day, for about 4 days.
    2. Heat 2T of EVOO in your pot
    3. Use your Food Processor to roughly chop all your vegetables (NOT the meat). You don’t need to liquify them, just chop them into ‘bite-size’ pieces appropriate for your pet.
    4. Put all vegetables and the raw meats into the pot.
    5. Add your chicken broth to the pot.
    6. Add enough water to cover the meats
    7. Put the pot on the stove and bring to a boil.
    8. Once it boils, turn down heat to medium and cook for 20-30 minutes or until the meats reach an internal temp of 165 degrees. If you want a good thermometer to check this, here’s the one I use:
ThermoPro TP03A Digital Food Cooking Thermometer Instant Read Meat Thermometer for Kitchen BBQ Grill Smoker
    9. After 20-30 minutes, remove your meats and use the food processor to chop the meat. Then return the meat to the pot – at this point, it should start to look like a stew.
    10. If you are going to serve immediately, be sure to let it cool first – maybe add an ice cube or two to your pet’s bowls.
    11. Refrigerate any unused portion. It should keep for 3-4 days in the fridge (OR) you can also freeze it for long-term use.
    12. Watch your pets go crazy for this food!

NOTE: clarification on the video. We strive to have Sassy’s Blood Sugar be between 90-150 when she is not eating and 2 hours post-meal. After meals, we test her about 30 minutes after eating and we give her an injection based on what her BS is at that time. We prefer to see her be less than 180-250 within 30 minutes post meal, but regardless we always try to match the amount of insulin we give to her based on what her blood sugar is at the time.
