Battle of the Kamados: Big Green Egg vs. Kamado Joe. Who wins in 2024?

If you follow my blog you know I love kamado-style cooking, and who doesn’t? Kamado-style grills have revolutionized outdoor cooking, offering versatility, efficiency, and unparalleled flavor. Among the titans of this market stand two behemoths: the Big Green Egg and the Kamado Joe. Both have earned fervent followings and boast impressive features, but which one reigns supreme? I’ve talked about this before in years past and now it’s time to revisit the challenge so let’s dissect these iconic grills and crown a winner.

Big Green Egg: The O.G. Kamado

For decades, the Big Green Egg has been the gold standard of kamado grills. Crafted from high-quality ceramic, it’s renowned for its durability and heat retention. Here are some of its standout features:

Pros:

  1. Legendary Durability: The Big Green Egg’s thick ceramic construction not only retains heat exceptionally well but also ensures longevity. It’s built to last a lifetime.
  2. Temperature Control: Precise temperature management is a breeze with the Big Green Egg. Its top and bottom vents allow for effortless adjustment, giving you full control over cooking temperatures.
  3. Versatility: From low-and-slow smoking to high-heat grilling and even baking, the Big Green Egg excels across the board. Its versatility makes it a true all-in-one outdoor cooking solution.
  4. Warranty: While warranties may vary by region, the Big Green Egg typically offers a generous warranty, providing peace of mind to its users.

Cons:

  1. Price: Quality comes at a cost, and the Big Green Egg is no exception. It’s often one of the pricier options on the market, which can be a deterrent for budget-conscious buyers.
  2. Limited Accessories: While the Big Green Egg does offer a range of accessories, some users find the selection to be more limited compared to competitors like Kamado Joe.
  3. More expensive Accessories – not only does the BGE offer fewer original accessories but they are more expensive generally than the Kamado Joe comparable offerings.

Kamado Joe: The Challenger

In recent years, Kamado Joe has emerged as a formidable competitor to the Big Green Egg. With innovative features and a loyal fanbase, it offers a compelling alternative.

Readers of my blog know about my long love for the Kamado Joe – I’ve been cooking on it for years and it’s never let me down. The brand continues to innovate. Here’s what sets it apart…

Pros:

  1. Divide & Conquer Cooking System: Kamado Joe’s Divide & Conquer cooking system allows for multi-level cooking, providing flexibility and maximizing grill space. It’s a game-changer for those who like to cook different foods simultaneously.
  2. Air Lift Hinge: One of Kamado Joe’s standout features is its Air Lift Hinge, which makes opening and closing the heavy ceramic lid effortless. It’s a small detail that greatly enhances user experience.
  3. Accessories Galore: Kamado Joe boasts an extensive lineup of accessories, ranging from grill grates to rotisserie kits. Many of them are made specifically for the Kamado Joe but can also be used with the BGE. Also, the KJ accessories tend to cost less on average than the BGE versions. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned grill master, there’s something to enhance your cooking experience. Check out the MANY KJ accessories here.
  4. Value for Money: While still an investment, Kamado Joe often offers more features at a comparable or even lower price point than the Big Green Egg, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Cons:

  1. Ceramic Quality: Some users have reported issues with the quality of Kamado Joe’s ceramic, citing concerns about cracking or chipping over time. While not widespread, it’s worth considering, especially given the investment.
  2. Learning Curve: The Kamado Joe’s Air Lift Hinge and other features may take some getting used to for those accustomed to traditional grills. While not necessarily a con, it’s something to be aware of for newcomers.

The Verdict: And the Winner Is…

Choosing between the Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe ultimately comes down to personal preference and priorities. Both are exceptional grills that deliver outstanding results, but there can only be one winner in this battle of the kamados.

Drumroll, please…

The winner, by a narrow margin, is (still) the Kamado Joe!

While the Big Green Egg holds the crown as the original kamado grill and offers unparalleled durability, temperature control and quality, Kamado Joe’s innovative features, extensive accessory lineup, and overall value for money give it the edge in this showdown in my opinion. The Divide & Conquer cooking system and Air Lift Hinge are standout features that enhance usability and cooking versatility, while the lower price point makes it a more accessible option for many consumers – and who doesn’t want to pay less for more value?

That said, both grills are fantastic choices that will undoubtedly elevate your outdoor cooking game. Whether you’re a seasoned pitmaster or a weekend warrior, you can’t go wrong with either the Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe. Happy grilling!

Kamado Joe Accessories – 10 Best Accessories for your Kamado Joe!

Are you a Kamado Joe owner like me? Whether you’re a long-time owner of a KJ or a newbie, this article can help. We’ll discuss which accessories are the best to buy for your Kamado Joe and why. You’ll find reviews, tips, and recommendations for over 200 Kamado Joe accessories that will take your cooks to the next level.

Kamado Joe Accessories – Top 10 List

There are 200+ recommended accessories for your Kamado Joe on this page, but if you don’t have time to read all the reviews, watch the vids, and fully engage with this page, then here’s a quick ‘Top 10’ List to get your started.

1-Kamado specific Cookbook

Don’t overlook this item if you are new to kamado cooking – there is a learning curve with your KJ and these two books are great ‘user manuals’ that will help you learn the craft faster.

Seriously if you only get 1 item from this entire page, get one of these books and read the section about ‘how to use a kamado’ so you can overcome the learning curve faster. The tips in these books are invaluable and I wish I would have read them when I first started.

Here are 3 great kamado cookbooks to get you started:

2-Hand Protection

Your kamado will get HOT. You need hand protection!

This could be welding gloves or high heat rubber-style gloves. Here are a few to consider…

Shop our store to see more glove options.

3 – The JoeTisserie

Accept no substitute for the most awesome kamado rotisserie unit for your Kamado Joe – The JoeTisserie!

It add so much flexibility to your cooking repertoire – check out this video to learn more…

4- Kamado Pizza Accessories

Because you know you want to make pizzas in your KJ, right? Try one of these pizza stones or get the new Kamado Joe DoJoe to get a real wood-fired pizza oven experience!

Check out this vid to see the Kamado Joe DoJoe in action…

Here are some more pizza accessories to consider for your Kamado Joe…

5-Cast-iron Cookware.

Cast-iron + Kamado Joe = perfect match.

The Kamado Joe cast iron inserts for your Divide and Conquer Flexible Cooking System are a great start. Other options are a dutch oven (with a wire handle for easier lifting) or highly functional plancha pan.

Learn more about cast-iron under Cooking Surfaces below.

You’ll want to add these to your list…

  1. Kamado Joe Cast Iron Griddle
  2. Kamado Joe Cast Iron Grates
  3. Lodge Dutch Oven
  4. Lodge Plancha Pan

6-Good Remote Thermometer

As fun as it is to cook on the Kamado Joe nobody wants to sit by the fire all day. You want be with friends, drink a few brews, and relax without always wondering about the temps of your meats. Having a good remote thermometer allows you to do that. The top two brands (in my opinion) ThermoPro or Maverick.

Ones I personally own are the ThermoPro TP20 and the Maverick ET732.

7-Electric Charcoal Lighter

Stop with the blow torches and the tumbleweed, just get an electric charcoal lighter – it’s easier. End of story. You’ll thank me for this one. Kamado Joe makes a good electric lighter and so does Grill Dome:

8-Ash Basket

Why do you want an ash basket for your kamado?

Because it will increase your airflow and get more from your lump. The classic option is the Kick Ash Basket but Kamado Joe now has their own version too.

9-Quality Lump Charcoal & Smoking Wood Chunks

No matter what accessories you buy for your Kamado Joe or how well you manage your fire, if you don’t have quality lump charcoal and/or quality smoking wood chunks to cook with, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. There’s nothing like doing everything right and then having the food taste bad because the lump charcoal you used was made with poor quality wood or too much of a particularly strong wood (like hickory). I’d recommend you buy good quality lump charcoal that has a mix of hardwoods that work with all types of foods for your basic cooks and then buy smoking wood chunks for particular flavor profiles you want to add in later (such as hickory for chicken, fruit woods for fish, etc).

Lump Charcoal brands I like:

Smoking Wood Chunks to consider include:

10- Quality Grilling Basket

Do you need it?

I think so. Particularly when you get a grilling basket with a removable handle it allows you to turn fish, veggies, and delicate items easily – saving time, hassle, AND protecting your food. Here are a few I like…

Obviously you’re gonna need some quality meat and plenty of friends and family to enjoy your KJ cooks with, but for now these 10 “Must Have” accessories are the basics that will get you fast-tracked for success with your Kamado Joe. Once you have these in your arsenal, then move on to the full list below.

THE FULL LIST – 200+ Best Accessories for your Kamado Joe

I. Cooking Surfaces

Before we get started on discussing the best cooking surfaces for Kamado Joe we’d be remiss if we didn’t pay homage to the fact that even though Kamado Joe wasn’t the first kamado to the party, KJ has revolutionized the kamado industry – not just with the quality of the Kamado Joe in general but with their continued commitment to INNOVATION. There is perhaps no greater example of this than Kamado Joe’s world-famous “Divide and Conquer” Flexible Cooking System. Since many of the cooking surfaces we’re about to recommend utilize the amazing Divide and Conquer system, let’s just make sure you understand the advantages it offers you…

A picture tells a 1,000 words in this case right?

You can use the Divide and Conquer Flexible Cooking System in your Kamado Joe to…

  • Cook High
  • Cook Low
  • Cook both Direct AND Indirect at the same time
  • And gain a world of flexibility.

And best of all the Divide and Conquer Flexible Cooking System comes standard in your new Kamado Joe!

Now that we understand what the Divide and Conquer system is, let’s look at some great cooking surfaces that you can use in it…

Must Have Surface – Kamado Joe Cast Iron GRIDDLE

Why you need the Cast Iron Griddle.

The Kamado Joe Cast Iron Griddle is the #1 “Must Have” Cooking Surface according to most KJ Owners I’ve talked to and I would agree – it’s just so versatile.

Check out my full review to learn more about the Kamado Joe Cast Iron Griddle. Meanwhile doesn’t this vid look good?

If for some reason you want a stainless steel griddle, you do have an option – Little Griddle makes a nice half-moon griddle specifically for the Kamado. It’s super easy to clean and has a convenient grease trough.

Regardless of what griddle you get, you’ll definitely want some griddle tools – Blackstone is the brand you want there and the Blackstone Signature Griddle tools are a great value.

Nice to Have Surface – Kamado Joe Cast-Iron GRATES

Although the cast-iron griddle is very versatile and I believe should be your first ‘cast iron’ choice, the grates are also useful – you’ll allow more flames thru the grates vs the griddle and you’ll also get those beautiful grill marks too. For the money, the Kamado Joe Cast Iron grates are a good value. Here’s the latest Amazon pricing…

Kamado Joe Cast Iron

Chef’s Surface – Kamado Joe Soapstone Surface

Although I think it’s a nice to have item, others disagree. In fact, this is a bit of a controversial choice because many KJ owners on Facebook consider the Kamado Joe Soapstone cooking surface even more of a must-have than the cast iron griddle.

The Kamado Joe Soapstone is great for cooking more delicate items like fish and veggies that you don’t want to use on a cedar plank or in a basket and Chef Eric Gephart with Kamado Joe the alleged master of cooking with surface.

Let’s see the Kamado Joe Soapstone in action…

Must-HAVE – The JoeTisserie

We already talked about the Kamado Joe JoeTisserie as one of your Top 10 Must Have items.

Remember, the JoeTisserie will turn your kamado into a rotisserie-style cooker and take your Kamado Joe to the next level.

But the JoeTisserie is not just for cooking chicken, you can also use it for some great Brazilian-style steak, pork, and more.

Big Green Egg Owner? Have no fear, the JoeTisserie will work for you too!

Check out the versatility of the JoeTisserie…

Add a grilling basket to the JoeTisserie

Why? Because if you combo a quality grilling basket onto your JoeTisserie then you can cook chicken wings, veggies, and expand your game even further!

Here are a few rotisserie grilling basket attachments to consider…

II – Making wood-fired PIZZA on your Kamado Joe

One of my family and friends’ favorite things to make in our Kamado Joe is wood-fired pizzas. They’re fun to make, taste great, and easy to do. See for yourself…

So now that you’re ready to make some pies on your KJ, what are the best pizza accessories? Here’s a few to add to your shopping list:

And I highly recommend the cookbook “The Elements of Pizza” if you really want to learn how to make a great pie.

III. Don’t Overlook these Helpful Items

A Good Dutch Oven for Your Kamado

Do you need it?

Definitely! With a Dutch Oven you can expand your recipe list extensively. BAKE and FRY to your heart’s content with a Dutch Oven in your Kamado.

Yes I said FRY! You can do it safely if you follow the directions of Eric Mitchell in the Smoke it Like a Pro cookbook.

There’s two dutch ovens I like best…

Both have the wire grip handle that makes it easier to manage on your KJ (in my opinion).

A WOK for your Kamado?

Imagine being able to do  stir-fry’s and other wok-style cooking on your KJ!

You can do that with the Kamado Joe Wok – it’s big, heavy, and quality construction!

Doesn’t this cook look good?

Kamado Joe Chicken Stand

If you like making ‘beer can’ chicken, this may be fore you.

FYI, lots of KJ Owners on FB don’t like this item and many do NOT think this is even a nice-to-have, but I really do like mine and thinks it’s a convenient way to cook beer can chicken.

Click here to see the Kamado Joe Chicken Stand on Amazon

Cedar Plank Cooking

You can’t go wrong with cooking fish on cedar plank in your Kamado Joe – but cedar can be used for veggies and meats too.

You’ll find a wide variety of 4-star rated cedar planks on this page.

Cooking and Drip Pans

An assortment of useful cooking pans that sit on the grates and/or fit into the Kamado Joe Accessory Rack. Item #1 (The Plancha) is super popular and highly useful.

IV. Kamado Joe Accessories – BOOKS

There’s no denying that there IS a learning curve when it comes to kamado grill cooking. Do yourself a favor and don’t try to figure it all out on your own – you’ll just end up burning a lot of food and getting frustrated. It doesn’t have to be that way. There are a number of good books out there that can help you master kamado cooking and speed up your learning curve. Here are two of my favorites books – they provide some awesome kamado grill recipes as well as MANY helpful tips.

As I said above, the top two books you must get are…

Hot Coals and Smoke It Like a Pro are basically ‘user manuals’ for your kamado grill and that alone would be reason to purchase them. But on top of that, both of these books also have some great kamado recipes I use all the time. Can you say “Bonus!”

These two titles are truly must-have books for all new kamado owners so be sure to pick them up.

Here are a few more kamado and smoking meat cookbooks – these are from the biggest names in the industry…

V. All about ASH BASKETS

What is an Ash Basket and why might you want one for your kamado?

An Ash Basket lets you simply lift out used charcoal and ash before every cook and it is reported to increase air flow around your lump charcoal.

When you use an ash basket you can dispose of ashes and be ready for your next cook in seconds—no muss, no fuss. Just lift the ash basket out and give it a few shakes in your grill or over a trash can (make sure the fire is completely out!), then set the ash basket back in place, add some fresh charcoal, and you’re ready to go in seconds.

Spaces between the ash basket’s rings allow the small particles to fall through when you shake the ashes out. You can start each cook with an ideal fuel load, whether you’re searing steaks or going low and slow. You get easier starts and more even burning for ultimate temperature control.

The most popular choices for ash baskets are the Kick Ash Basket and the new Kamado Joe Ash Basket.

The Kick Ash Basket

The most popular Kamado Joe accessory that is not a cooking surface that’s recommended by Kamado Joe owners on Facebook is the Kick Ash Basket.

Click pic to check price on Amazon

The Kick Ash Basket’s wire construction also allows much freer airflow than the stock grate. Open up the vents and you can achieve high temperatures faster than you’ve been able to reach them before. Create perfectly-seared steaks and chops, incredible “brick oven” pizza, and more. You can use the Kick Ash Basket with or without your lower charcoal grate underneath it. If you travel with your grill for tailgating, competition or just showing off for Thanksgiving, it takes a long time for your cooker to cool down and prevents you from loading up the Kamado in your vehicle right away. The Kick Ash Basket lets you lift out the hot remaining charcoal and dispose of it properly.

Kamado Joe Ash Basket

Did you know Kamado Joe now makes it’s own stainless steel ash basket?

It’s pretty sweet and even has a divider in the middle AND it also hooks onto your Divide and Conquer Cooking System. Check it out…

VI. Temperature Controls, Thermometers, & Remote Temp Probes

The Kamado Joe iKamand Temperature Controller

The Kamado Joe iKamand is now available on our website LordoftheGrills and on Amazon.

A Remote Thermometer.

Grab a beer, watch the game, and relax – you can do all of that and more with a good remote thermometer – another must have accessory for kamado grills in my book.

Here are the two most popular choices are the ThermoPro TP20 and the Maverick ET732.

More Helpful Thermometers…

You’ll need a quality instant thermometer as well as a “Candy” thermometer if you want to monitor frying oils, etc. And don’t overlook the Temperature “Gun” for checking surfacetemps accurately on your grill cooking surfaces and so much more (I use it all the time).

VII. Tips for Charcoal, Fire Starters, Gloves, and more…

An Electric Charcoal Lighter

C’mon man, it’s just easier! Who wants to waste time and money trying to light your Kamado Joe? Not me, that’s why I consider an electric charcoal lighter to be a must-have kamado grill accessory. You have LOTS of other things to worry about – getting the fire started with your lump should not be one of them!

Quality Lump Charcoal

Personally I use the KJ-Char. Now I know there are a lot of charcoal options out there when it comes to kamado grilling and there’s even a list of quality options on the Naked Whiz Database, but for my money, I believe in the Kamado Joe Lump Charcoal brand – specifically the Big Block XL version. Why? Because not only is the bag filled with really big lumps of charcoal, but even more importantly, the type of wood used is a combination of various hardwoods so you get a great flavor but not an overpowering flavor. (If you’ve ever used lump charcoal that is primarily made with hickory then you know what I mean). The KJ-Char is great for kamado grill cooking because you can use it for all types of food – from pizza, to chicken, to beefs, to pork, and fish. It works for all of it and it compliments it all well. Using KJ-Char as your base also gives you the flexibility to then add your own wood chips to add additional specific flavors (cherry, pecan, apple, etc) depending on what you’re cooking.

Here are some options to consider…

Grilling GLOVES

Three good choices…

Shop our store to see more glove options.

VIII. What about a Custom Table?

Now if you’ve already put your Kamado Joe into a permanent place in your outdoor kitchen then just skip this part.

Sadly when I built my outdoor kitchen I didn’t take the builder’s advice and put in a kamado — then again he recommended a Big Green Egg so perhaps it’s good I waited?

Instead I put in a sink that I rarely use – boo hoo.

And a side-burner that I never use – boo hoo hoo!

But thankfully I did put in a fridge, it’s stocked with beer, and I use that ALL the time – whew!

So alas, my outdoor kitchen lacks a Kamado Joe station, but don’t feel too bad for me, I like to think my setup is still pretty sweet (anytime you can watch TV from the pool AND be grilling I call that a win)…

This was my setup before the KJ Table…

So….

Assuming you don’t have the option to put in an outdoor kitchen (or you already built one like I did WITHOUT a KJ and you don’t want to modify it), AND assuming you don’t just want to keep your Kamado Joe in a nest, then there IS probably one more thing you’re gonna want pretty soon after you get your KJ.

Now if you are a handy man, there are lots of plans on the internet about how to make your own custom kamado grill table. Unfortunately I’m not crafty so I  purchased my table online.

Here’s an article I wrote about the Best Kamado Grill Tables>>>

Don’t Forget the COVER…

BTW, if you want a COVER that will fit over BOTH the kamado grill AND the table, I found one of those too on Amazon:

(BTW if you shop around, you’ll see this is a great price for a heavy duty cover that is BIG ENOUGH to cover the table AND the KJ).

For more kamado covers check out this page on LordoftheGrills.

Gifts for Dad – Coffee Lover Gift Ideas

1-The Aeropress

If your dad is a coffee lover, delight him with an Aeropress.

The Aeropress is a simple tool, inexpensive device but trust me when I tell you that will change his coffee life forever.

Not only will Dad enjoy a great cup of coffee, but he can treat himself to it anytime, anywhere.

Bonus Coffee Gifts He May Also Like

This is the coffee grinder I use for grinding fresh beans. Sure there are $300+ dollar machines that may offer a finer cut but for  the Epica Grinder is an inexpensive grinder that will work just fine for all the but most snobby coffee connoisseur men.

Speaking of a fine grind. You’ll find no better ceramic burr grinder for the price than the JavaPresse. It produces grains as fine as some of the most expensive grinders – the only problem is that it’s a manual device. If Dad doesn’t mind grinding his own beans by hand, then the JavaPress is the grinder for him.

If Dad is going to use the Aeropress then he’s going to need a way to boil water quickly and consistently AND he’ll likely want to be able to control the temperature to get his perfect cup of coffee. For that I use the Epica Tea Kettle. In fact I use it multiple times every day — for coffee, tea, or any time I want hot water. The ability to easily control the temperature of my water AND the great price make this a must-have gift for Aeropress Dads.

A great all around blend of coffee beans that most men will enjoy.

One of the most popular coffee options on Amazon now.

If your Dad likes to camp or do outdoor sports but still wants to use his Aeropress, then consider the JetBoil. It’s a convenient way to boil water on the go.

If I could only recommend ONE book for your dad to read this year and guarantee you he will love it (because it will make his life easier) it’s Tim Ferriss’ Tools of Titans book.

If he doesn’t already have a Tim Ferriss book, this is the classic that started the Tim Ferriss revolution.

This is Tim Ferriss’ latest book. It’s a follow-up to The Tools of Titans.

Thee reason you want the PAPERWHITE edition is because Dad can take it anywhere with him – even to the beach or outside and the ‘paper’ appearance  of the device makes it readable even under bright light conditions where other e-readers and tablets wouldn’t work.

This magnetic stud finder is under $10 and yet it’s incredibly useful when Dad is trying to hang up pictures or tv mounts or anything he has to drill into the wall for.

Super popular and with good reason – this laser distance measure is like having a tape measure that goes up to 65 feet!

Kamado Joe III Review – Editor’s Choice Award

Readers of this blog know I’m a Kamado Joe fan and we’ve talked about how awesome the Kamado Joe grill is in numerous prior articles.

Today I’m thrilled to be able to talk to you about the all new Kamado Joe III – a product which has earned the Helpful Dad Editor’s Choice Award.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the Kamado Joe III, I’ll provide you links to learn more, we’ll check latest prices, and talk about whether you should upgrade if you already have a kamado grill. Sound good? Let’s go!

Meet the Kamado Joe III

In 2019, the Kamado Joe company introduced the Kamado Joe III. Here’s Kamado Joe’s intro vid…

Although the vid only features the Classic and Big Joe models, the Kamado Joe III will eventually come in three sizes: the Classic III, the Big Joe III, and the new Pro Joe.

Here’s what they look like. You can also check latest prices…

Kamado Joe Classic III

Kamado Joe Big Joe III

Kamado Joe Pro Joe

So what, you say? Big deal? Why should you care?

Because the Kamado Joe III is a game changer.

What’s new with the Kamado Joe III?

As usual, Kamado Joe continues to innovate. The company that brought you the Divide and Conquer flexible cooking system, the JoeTisserie rotisserie, the pizza DoJoe, the safer air-lift hinge, the temperature controlling iKamand, a wide variety of easy to use cooking inserts, and so many more new products, has now introduced the SloRoller Hyperbolic Smoke Chamber

Wait, what?

The SloRoller Hyperbolic Smoke Chamber is a bit of a mouthful so let’s just call it the SloRoller.

OK, so what is it?

The SloRoller is “the first of its kind, the revolutionary SlōRoller leverages patented, Harvard science that transforms a Kamado Joe® into one of the world’s most optimal smokers.”

Blah, blah, blah. So what does that mean?

Kamado Joe says the benefit of the SloRoller is “by distributing smoke and heat in rolling, recirculating waves, the SlōRoller surrounds food in clouds of delicious smoke while evenly distributing heat—resulting in enhanced flavor and significantly reduced hot spots.”

The SloRoller is ideal for low and slow bbq cooking – think Franklin Barbeque, Big Bob Gibson, or your own backyard.

Let’s learn more about the SloRoller…

Pretty cool, huh?

I’m down for fewer hot spots and better flavor, how about you?

Kamado Joe III – Full Review

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know that our Kamado Joe articles have become so popular that we’ve started a new website called LordoftheGrills.com. We’ve published a full review of the Kamado Joe III and encourage you to read it. Click the following pic to read more about the Kamado Joe III, see the specs, get comparisons of the Kamado Joe III vs the Kamado Joe II, the Kamado Joe III vs the Big Green Egg, see everything that the Kamado Joe III comes with, and learn even more about the SloRoller….

What can you do with the Kamado Joe III?

There’s no better way to judge the new Kamado Joe III then to see it ‘in action.”

For that we turn to legendary Kamado Joe Chef John Setzler. John has already been busy experimenting with the Kamado Joe III – let’s see some of his latest cooks on this new grill…

Those are just a few examples. YouTube is filled with other cooks featuring the Kamado Joe III’s SloRoller.

Links to learn more

That said, if you’re like me, you probably like to read reviews from multiple trusted sources. This product is still quite new so there’s not a lot of reviews out there, in addition to our full review at LordoftheGrills, here are a few we found helpful…

So, should you upgrade to the Kamado Joe III?

As I wrote about on my expert review of the Kamado Joe III on the LordoftheGrills.com site, the question of whether to upgrade to the Kamado Joe III is interesting.

If you already have a kamado like the Kamado Joe Classic II or the Big Green Egg, you might not want to upgrade because you could buy the SloRoller insert (once it goes on sale), however even Kamado Joe says that using the insert with an older kamado may not get you the full performance that the SloRoller is designed for.

Why? Because the new Kamado Joe III is actually a larger kamado. In fact, the Kamado Joe Classic III is nearly 3 inches taller than the Kamado Joe Classic II and the Kamado Joe Big Joe III is over 4 inches taller than the Kamado Joe Big Joe II.

The reason the Kamado Joe III models are different goes back to that Harvard Science – the larger chamber is designed to take full advantage of the SloRoller by providing a ‘hyperbolic smoke chamber.’ Here’s what the science looks like…

If you use your kamado to do a lot of low and slow bbq cooking, then you’ll really benefit from the Kamado Joe III being specifically designed for the SloRoller Smoke Chamber.

Because the Kamado Joe III is so revolutionary, I am recommending that if you have the funds and you want the best kamado on the market today, then you should buy the Kamado Joe III.

And when you do send me a pic of all the great food you’re cooking – no better yet invite me over for a brew and some wings!

What are YOUR thoughts?

Have you already cooked on the Kamado Joe III? Do you have plans to buy one? Or do you have a different opinion? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe – 10 Reasons Why the Debate May Finally be Over! But Who Wins?

Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe – which is the better kamado? It seems like this debate has been raging for years now, but in light of new product developments, maybe it’s time to wonder: is there finally a clear winner between these kamado giants? And if so, which kamado king will wear the crown?

In this article, we’ll provide a head-to-head comparison of the Big Green Egg vs the Kamado Joe across 10 categories for review as we examine build quality, innovation, owner satisfaction, average reviews, overall price to value, and more, so put your grilling apron on and let’s get cooking!

Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe

Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe – Current Products

Before we get into the head-to-head comparison, it’s important to know what’s currently available from each kamado manufacturer since recent updates will play a role in our results. As it stands now, here are each company’s latest kamado’s.

Big Green Egg

Big Green Egg currently offers SEVEN sizes of kamados, they are: The Big Green Egg Mini, Minimax, Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, and 2XL.

Big Green Egg Sizes
Big Green Egg Kamado Lineup

You can see every version of the BGE lineup on the official “How do you like your Eggs?” webpage where you can check out full specs, cooking grill dimensions, available accessories, etc.

The takeaway here is that Big Green Egg offers a kamado for every need. Additionally, outside of the size variations, but for minor updates over the years, the BGE kamado hasn’t changed much since it’s release in 1974. It’s a quality kamado, beloved in the passionate Egghead Community, and continues to be one of the best selling kamados on the market.

Kamado Joe

Like Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe is a retailer that offers a variety of sizes in its kamado lineup. Currently on it’s third major update, the Kamado Joe III lineup is comprised of 3 versions: the Kamado Joe Classic III, Big Joe III, and Pro Joe III. There is also the Kamado Joe Junior.

Kamado Joe Pro Joe
Kamado Joe Big Joe III
Kamado Joe Classic III
Kamado Joe Junior

Additionally, prior versions of the Kamado Joe lineup (particularly the wildly popular Kamado Joe II variations are still widely being sold).

The takeaway here is that, although Kamado Joe doesn’t offer the same breath of size variations as the Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe does offer the most popular size options AND has continued to innovate the kamado technology itself over the years. We’ll see the impact of this in our head-to-head ratings below.

10 Head to Head Comparisons of Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe

In this section we’ll compare the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe kamados across the spectrum of 10 categories. Our goal is to see which kamado maker will emerge as the winner of this long debate.

Who will wear the crown as King of the Kamado’s?

Let’s find out!

1 – History

The concept of kamado cooking is said to have originated in China over 3,000 years ago and KamadoJim has a great little writeup about the history of the kamado grill. It seems that after World War II, American GI’s brought the kamado grill concept to the US and then in 1974 it was commercialized by a US Serviceman named Ed Fisher who launched The Big Green Egg brand in Atlanta, GA.

Conversely, Kamado Joe didn’t come onto the market until 2009 and although the brand has captured a large chuck of the kamado market since then, it doesn’t have near the history of the Big Green Egg.

Winner: Big Green Egg

2 – Build Quality

Big Green Egg Eggtoberfest
Big Green Egg Eggtoberfest

Kamados have become so popular that the marketplace is filled with all sorts of kamados – you see them everywhere now and it seems like everyone and their brother has a knockoff version to sell you.

Don’t be fooled into buying a lesser quality kamado – not only may you have problems with the lifespan of the ceramic (i.e. the exterior kamado shell that holds in the heat), or the firebox (interior rings) may crack, or it may not cook evenly, or the kamado company may go out of business all together!

Instead understand that the purchase of a kamado is an investment – an investment into your personal cooking enjoyment and your family’s outdoor lifestyle. Buy a quality kamado and you can expect it to last for a decade or more. Buy a crappy one and you may well have to replace it in a year or two.

BOTH the Big Green Egg and the Kamado Joe are classified in the industry as top of the line kamados for a reason – they are both well built and capable of providing superior performance over the long term.

This is not to say that the Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe haven’t had minor quality control issues in the past, they have. However both companies have continued to improve their products to fix those issues (building with better quality ceramics, improving the hinges, creating a new firebox, etc, etc). As a result, both companies have developed a reputation for high end build quality.

Winner: TIE

3 – Popularity

Given that Big Green Egg has been on the market since 1974 and the Kamado Joe brand is still only about a decade old, there’s really no comparison on this one – ARMIES of EGGHEADS cannot be denied and I wouldn’t dare to argue with them.

Consider these articles about the Big Green Egg Phenomenon

Big Green Egg Eggtoberfest
Big Green Egg Eggtoberfest

Additionally there are countless online forums, Facebook groups, and Reddit threads about the Big Green Egg, and while Kamado Joe has some forums, Facebook groups, and Reddit threads, there’s really no comparison – Big Green Egg still appears to be the most popular brand of kamado in the US.

BTW, another quirky way you can tell is by looking at the swag that people buy on Amazon – there’s a ton for Big Green Egg and not much for Kamado Joe…yet.

Winner – Big Green Egg

4 – Owner Satisfaction AND Brand Loyalty

Gee whiz, it looks like the battle of Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe isn’t much of a contest is it? So far the BGE is running away with this. Should we just crown BGE and be done with it?

Not so fast, because here’s where things start to get interesting.

When it comes to Owner Satisfaction, both Kamado Joe and Big Green Egg claim top spots in the kamado community and owner satisfaction is very high for both brands. Whichever brand you buy you’ll probably end up being satisfied too (at least in terms of overall quality if not overall price to value, but more on that below).

HOWEVER, when it comes to brand loyalty, one thing we can clearly see in the online world is that…

LOTS of people end up switching from Big Green Egg to Kamado Joe, but not many seem to switch from Kamado Joe to Big Green Egg.

I’m guessing the very reason YOU are reading this article is because you’re trying to decide between the two brands. Even the Egghead forums are filled with this question and if you peruse through the threads you’ll see countless stories about how loyal Eggheads made the switch to Kamado Joe (here’s one example of many) and are very happy. You can also find numerous articles online from folks who’ve debated the question and ended up deciding in favor of the Kamado Joe (for example, this article, and this one).

Kamado Joe Block Party
Kamado Joe Block Party

Perhaps the best testament to this is that, in less than a decade, Kamado Joe has become a fierce rival to Big Green Egg and the phrase “Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe” is one of the most popular search term when people shop for a kamado.

Because of all these trends, I would submit to you that Owner Satisfaction is likely a TIE between the two brands, but Brand Loyalty swings in favor of the Kamado Joe (because again, many people have switched from BGE to KJ, but you rarely hear about the switch from KJ to BGE).

Winner: Kamado Joe

5 – Innovation of the Kamado

As we discussed above in the first two categories, both Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe have spearheaded innovations in the kamado market. Ed Fisher and his Big Green Egg company are one of the big reasons why kamados have become so popular in the US and Mr. Fisher was one of the first to turn the 3,000 year old kamado concept into a commercialized product as a result of his innovative ideas. Over the years, Big Green Egg has continued to improve its product (with stronger ceramics, a patented vent door and hinge cap, updated hinges, and more). As such we would be remiss if we didn’t give the Big Green Egg its due as a leading innovator in the kamado world.

As for Kamado Joe, from the early days of the company, it sought to compete with Big Green Egg by producing at least a similar kamado cooker (thus the Kamado Joe Classic 1st Generation – which used to come in red or black). But since it’s launch in 2009, Kamado Joe hasn’t been satisfied with merely producing a similar product – instead the company has continued to innovate in order to try to create a superior kamado.

Kamado Joe Black

Kamado Joe has done more innovations of the overall kamado itself in the last 10 years than Big Green Egg has done in over 40.

Consider the following innovations just to the kamado cooker that Kamado Joe is responsible for…

  • Divide and Conquer Flexible Cooking System – an incredible feature that allowed us to cook both indirect and direct at the same time;
  • Kontrol Tower Top Vent – for more precise temperature control and better rain/moisture intrusion prevention.
  • Multi-panel Firebox – to help prevent cracks in the interior fire box.
  • Counterbalanced Air Lift Hinge – a safety feature that helps prevent the heavy lid from falling and cracking a problem that used to plague Big Green Eggs.
  • Slide-out Ash Drawer – for easier cleaning.
  • The New SlōRoller redesign as part of the Kamado Joe III launch that is designed to perfect the taste and texture of food on low-and-slow cooks.

In fact the new Kamado Joe III is such a game changer in terms of innovation of the kamado cooker that the launch of this product alone may well push the scales in favor of Kamado Joe.

You can read my full review of the new Kamado Joe III here…

Kamado Joe III
Kamado Joe III Review

For all these reasons, we must conclude…

Winner: Kamado Joe

6 – Innovation of Accessories

This category too offers little competition.

Nobody can argue that Kamado Joe has produced more impactful accessory innovations than Big Green Egg.

This is not to say that Big Green Egg doesn’t have great accessories because they do and you can read about 200+ Big Green Egg accessories in this article. However Kamado Joe is the KING of Kamado Accessories.

Here are just a few GAME-CHANGER Accessories that Kamado Joe is responsible for (click any pick to learn more)…

Kamado Joe JoeTisserie
Kamado Joe JoeTisserie
Kamado Joe Divide and Conquer
Kamado Joe Flexible Cooking System
Kamado Joe Pizza DoJoe
Kamado Joe iKamand

And we haven’t even mentioned the wide variation of cooking surfaces that Kamado Joe offers that go beyond just the standard stainless steel grates most kamados come with.

Kamado Joe has innovated all of the following…

The Kamado Joe accessories are so popular that Egghead Forums are filled with articles about Big Green Egg owners retrofitting their eggs in order to use Kamado Joe accessories in their BGE’s.

In addition to the cooking accessories, Kamado Joe has a boatload of other accessories including some great “Big Block” Lump Charcoal, an Ash Basket, a handy electric Firestarter, and more and more and more.

So who’s the winner of the kamado accessories innovation category?

Winner: Kamado Joe

7 – Availability

The score is currently 3-2 in favor of Kamado Joe vs Big Green Egg. Is Kamado Joe gonna run away with this game now? Ah, not so fast.

One of the reasons why Big Green Egg is still so popular is that you can find the Big Green Egg in more places – from big box stores to pool supply stores to outdoor kitchen makers and scores of local shops, it seems like Big Green Egg is everywhere. In a 15 mile radius of my house in the Tampa area there are more than 10 dealers selling the Big Green Egg. For Kamado Joe there are only 3.

In fact, there are so many retailers selling the Big Green Egg that the company has them ranked by service capabilities using Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum rankings.

But the story doesn’t end with just brick and mortar stores – after all, we live in an online shopping world don’t we? And yet, but for the occassional special packages offered by BGE, normally can’t buy the Big Green Egg online.

Kamado Joe is far easier to find online. In fact you can shop on Amazon at the Kamado Joe Amazon Store or find the brand many other online retailers which is very convenient.

So the bottom line here is that Big Green Egg rules the ‘shop in person’ world, while Kamado Joe rules the online world. The result then is…

Winner: TIE

8 – Summary of Respected Reviewers

If you’re read my blog before, you know I don’t claim to be something I’m not – I’m just an Average Joe like you and the purpose of this blog is to share ‘practical solutions to real life problems.’ Since most people are not made of money, if you’re considering spending a grand or more on buying a kamado, then you’ll probably want to do your research like I did and you’ll want some honest answers to the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe question.

I’ve written a separate article about my personal viewpoint on the debate, but one of the things I try to do on this blog is provide you with links to OTHER quality reviews and opinions. I think that’s relevant to our head-to-head debate here too. Here are some of the most popular opinion pieces on Google that talk about the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe question…

It seems pretty clear…

Winner: Kamado Joe

9 – Customer Complaints

You can’t be a market leader without having some customer complaints. Both Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe have had a few over the years.

Both Kamado Joe and Big Green Egg are known for providing top notch customer support in the event of an issue and both feature some of the best warranties in the kamado market.

Winner: Tie

10 – Overall Price to Value

We’ve made it to the last head-to-head comparison category, perhaps the most important one of all – in the battle of Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe which kamado offers the best price to value?

One of the ways that Kamado Joe captured so much of the kamado market from Big Green Egg is because Kamado Joe not only priced their comparable size kamados well below the price of a similar Big Green Egg, but Kamado Joe also provided a number of free accessories with its grills (including the amazing Divide and Conquer cooking system, nest, ash tool, and more).

Since then Big Green Egg prices have come down. Although if you review the forums noted above that talked about the Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe debate, you’ll see that most people still feel that Kamado Joe offers the better overall value.

Now it should be noted that with the release of the Kamado Joe III, the prices for Kamado Joes of a similar size are now higher in some cases than a Big Green Egg, HOWEVER it’s important to see what’s included in the package.

  • Kamado Joe III’s come standard with the SloRoller insert, the Divide and Conquer Cooking System, Ash Basket, Ash Tools, Kontrol Tower, Heat Deflectors, and more.
  • If you went with a Big Green Egg of comparable size, you’d have to buy some, if not all, of these highly useful accessories after the fact (which could add as much as $500 or more to your purchase price).

When we talk in terms of Price to Value, this is the reason most people switch from the Big Green Egg to the Kamado Joe…

The fact is that Kamado Joe gives you more of what you really need in your kamado (particularly in terms of the ability to cook in a wider variety of ways out of the box without the need to retrofit anything).

Because of these factors, the winner of price to value is…

Winner: Kamado Joe

Who is the Overall Winner – Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe?

If you’re keeping score in our Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe 10 Head-to-Head Comparisons, it ends up as 5 wins for Kamado Joe, 2 for Big Green Egg, and 3 Ties.

Now as I’ve written about before, whether you purchase a Kamado Joe or a Big Green Egg, you’ll probably be happy. Both kamado’s are superior options in the world of kamado cooking. Over the years I’ve purchased both a Big Green Egg and a Kamado Joe and I do like them both, HOWEVER last year I ended up giving my Big Green Egg away to a neighbor and now cook exclusively on my Kamado Joe.

Why did I give away my Egg?

Because I just wasn’t using it as much as my Kamado Joe.

With all the innovations that are built in to the Kamado Joe it’s just an easier to use kamado.

That counts for something in my book. I got tired of fiddling around with retrofitting the Egg to make it work like a Kamado Joe.

I just want to cook and Kamado Joe allows me to cook on a kamado grill easier than a Big Green Egg does.

And with the amazing new innovations of the Kamado Joe III, there really is no longer any debate.

The Kamado Joe is the KING OF KAMADO GRILLS.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

What about YOU?

II. What’s the Difference between the Kamado Joe III vs the Kamado Joe II?

We discussed the major differences between the Kamado Joe II vs the Kamado Joe II above, but since I know nobody really reads a full blog article nowadays and instead scans to the parts they want, let’s talk about it again. (BTW if you DID read the above then just skip ahead – wait, isn’t that the problem?!?)

So what’s the Kamado Joe III vs the Kamado Joe II – what’s the difference?

    It’s simple really…

The Kamado Joe III features a longer body that is designed to house the new SloRoller Hyperbolic Chamber Smoke insert – the SloRoller for low and slow bbq cooking and promises enhanced flavor and fewer hot spots.

Here’s what the difference looks like on the Kamado Joe Classic III vs the Classic II..

    Kamado Joe Classic II

    How does the SloRoller work?

This screen shot from the Kamado Joe website gives us a great idea of the ‘flow’ of smoke and heat in the Kamado Joe III using the SloRoller insert. Click the pic to see a larger view…

    Kamado Joe SloRoller

Besides the SloRoller insert, the Kamado Joe III also includes a more heavy-duty nest (with bottom shelf) and a free ash basket. Otherwise the Kamado Joe III is very similar to the Kamado Joe II.

In terms of the size difference, the Kamado Joe Classic III is nearly 3 inches taller than the Kamado Joe Classic II and the Kamado Joe Big Joe III is over 4 inches taller than the Kamado Joe Big Joe II.

These size differences may be important to note if you are trying to include the Kamado Joe III into a built-in kitchen or custom kamado table.

The CeramicGrillStore has a nice comparison chart if you want to see the full spec differences of the Kamado Joe III vs the Kamado Joe II. Or you can view them in detail on Kamado Joe’s site.

III. Kamado Joe III vs the Big Green Egg

This really isn’t a fair comparison. The Kamado Joe III features far and away more innovation than the Big Green Egg. However that doesn’t mean the Big Green Egg is a bad kamado. The fact is that the Big Green Egg is still one of the best kamados on the market today – you don’t remain a market leader in the kamado industry by producing a bad product. Big Green Egg’s are an awesome kamado (in fact I own both a BGE and an KJ) and you really can’t go wrong with either one.

Here’s a side by side of the Big Green Egg Large vs the Kamado Joe Classic III…

    Big Green Egg Large

    Kamado Joe Classic III

    Did you know?

The Big Green Egg can also be retrofitted to use many of the Kamado Joe innovations (for example you can use the Flexible Cooking System in a BGE and then use the Kamado Joe cooking inserts, you can put a JoeTisserie in your BGE or a DoeJoe, and you’ll probably be able to put the SloRoller insert in your BGE eventually too. Big Green Eggs are great and as a fellow Egghead I’m raising my beer to the BGE brand.

So should you just buy a Big Green Egg?

I’m not saying that. If you do, you’ll probably be happy. However, why not get the KJ III?

Seriously, let’s call a spade a spade, right? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that…

With all the many innovations designed by Kamado Joe specifically for use in a Kamado Joe grill, the Kamado Joe III is the perfect kamado to make the most of all these great accessories.

And if you buy into the Harvard science tech behind the redesign of the ceramic housing of the Kamado Joe III in order to take full advantage of the SloRoller smoke chamber, then you’ll be buying a Kamado Joe III yourself.

What’s the bottom line on the BGE vs KJ III?

Don’t overthink it – unless you are in love with green, get the Kamado Joe III and get cookin’!

IV. Reviews of the Kamado Joe III

You’ve pretty much already ready our review of the Kamado Joe III – we love it and are confident you will too.

That said, if you’re like me, you probably like to read reviews from multiple trusted sources. This product is still quite new so there’s not a lot of reviews out there, but here are a few we found helpful…

Here’s another helpful video from KJ’s John Setzler featuring a full walk-around and assembly of the Kamado Joe III. As a bonus he even cooks a boston butt!

Should you upgrade to the Kamado Joe III?

When considering upgrading from an old model of a great product you already love to a new model, it’s usually a tough question. For example, moving from the Kamado Joe Classic I or Big Green Egg Large to the Kamado Joe Classic II was indeed a tough call – the KJ I and BGE were already great kamados, so unless you really wanted the safety of the KJ II’s air-lift hinge or you needed a new firebox, etc, you might have had a hard time justifying the upgrade if your existing KJ I or BGE was still working well.

But in this case, I think the upgrade question is far more in play.

The Kamado Joe III ain’t your daddy’s kamado.

The SloRoller redesign really is a game changer and makes an upgrade far more justifiable if you are in the market again.

If you use your kamado to do a lot of low and slow bbq cooking, then you’ll really benefit from the Kamado Joe III being specifically designed for the SloRoller Smoke Chamber (check out that SloRoller Chicken vid again and see what I mean).

If you have the funds and you want the best kamado on the market today, then buy the Kamado Joe III. Then send me a pic of all the great food you’re cooking – no better yet invite me over for a brew and some wings.

Can you buy the SlōRoller Hyperbolic Smoke Chamber as an accessory for another Kamado Joe?

Actually you can – or you will be able to soon. Kamado Joe plans to release the SloRoller insert as an accessory you can use to retrofit your older Kamado Joe (or Big Green Egg).

You can sign up to be notified from Kamado Joe when the SloRoller is available or check back with us when we have it in stock at LordoftheGrills.

The only caveat is this – Kamado Joe specifically says that when you put a SloRoller in anything other than the Kamado Joe III “it may not perform as well [because the SloRoller] insert is optimized for the shapes and sizes” of the Classic III and Big Joe III.

That could be marketing puffery or it could be true. I guess it comes down to this – if you have the money, you’ll be able to enjoy the full benefits of the SloRoller by using it inside a Kamado Joe III. If you don’t want to upgrade, then it’s nice knowing you can still buy a SloRoller for your older Kamado Joe Classic, Big Joe, or Big Green Egg.

    Kamado Joe DoJoe

    I. Pizza on a kamado grill?

If you’re like me, then cooking a wood-fired pizza on your KJ is nothing new – heck it’s probably one of the reasons you bought your kamado, right? After all the crispy crust, bubbling cheese, and hint of smoke are the trademarks of a kamado grilled pizza and the cravings for good wood-fired pizza never dies.

Who wouldn’t want more of this?

But do we really need yet another Pizza accessory for our KJ?

I’d wager you’ve been cooking wood fired pizzas on your kamado for years, right? If so, then you’re probably using a pizza stone or a Pizza Porta, right? Both of these are great pizza accessories for your kamado so let’s take a look at each and then see how they compare to the new Kamado Joe DoJoe. It could be that you don’t need a DoJoe…then again, maybe you do?

II. Using a Pizza Stone for kamado pizzas

If you’re currently cooking pizzas on a pizza stone then I’ll bet you have one something like this right?

    amzn_assoc_tracking_id = “grill-site-20”; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = “manual”; amzn_assoc_ad_type = “smart”; amzn_assoc_marketplace = “amazon”; amzn_assoc_region = “US”; amzn_assoc_design = “enhanced_links”; amzn_assoc_asins = “B015364R2M”; amzn_assoc_placement = “adunit”; amzn_assoc_linkid = “ac87aebe891ab0497228c714bc9c80a2”; //z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=US

If you have a pizza stone, please know that I’m NOT here to knock the Kamado Joe pizza stones because I have one too and they work great. I’ve made countless pizzas on my KJ pizza stone such as this pepperoni, mushroom, and garlic classic style…

Cooking a pizza on a pizza stone in your KJ is “Kamado Pizza 101” and I mean that in a positive sense.

    //z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=US&adInstanceId=14b62f66-1905-48f6-ae2d-b546e4d5d6d5

Master the pizza stone on your kamado and you’ll never go hungry – unless of course you want to make more than one pie.

Then you’ve gotta deal with a few challenges, including:

    • Maintaining your temps vs lifting the lid to check your pizza.
    • Dealing with the high heat temps (550-750+) depending on your method and being on guard against a dangerous backdraft/flashback.

Because of these issues, some have opted for the Pizza Porta accessory…

III. Using a Pizza Porta for kamado pizzas

The Pizza Porta was a first-of-its-kind pizza accessory for your kamado that converted your ceramic grill into a pizza oven. The Pizza Porta looks like this…

    amzn_assoc_tracking_id = “grill-site-20”; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = “manual”; amzn_assoc_ad_type = “smart”; amzn_assoc_marketplace = “amazon”; amzn_assoc_region = “US”; amzn_assoc_design = “enhanced_links”; amzn_assoc_asins = “B07P7DMXPP”; amzn_assoc_placement = “adunit”; amzn_assoc_linkid = “473bf15b5dc8aba4f8abf05c9fa4a973”; //z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/onejs?MarketPlace=US

How does the Pizza Porta work?

The Pizza Porta works by closing off the kamado chimney so you can retain the heat and keep the dome hot. The Pizza Porta door lets you control airflow for temperature control and most importantly…

Cook the top of your pizza the same rate as the bottom!

The Pizza Porta is a quality kamado pizza accessory and for years it was the best way to use your kamado to make a number of pizzas faster and more consistently vs a typical pizza stone.

    Until the Kamado Joe DoJoe…
