10 Reasons Why Wearing a Face Mask May be HARMFUL to Your Health

In this article I will discuss the growing sentiment among the medical community that it’s NOT a good idea to constantly wear a face mask. I’ll give you scientific references to support 10 reasons why face masks may be causing you more harm than good AND point out why some doctors believe wearing a face mask may actually make the Coronavirus WORSE if you happen to get it!

To be clear, I am NOT suggesting that YOU not wear a mask if you prefer to, instead I am advocating that masks not be REQUIRED for the reasons presented herein.

Why Write This Article?

Although mainstream media may want us to believe that all doctors believe face masks work and that every scientific paper supports face masks as being effective as stopping the spread of Covid-19, the fact is that this is NOT true.

Today’s article is therefore NOT focused on whether on not masks work vs Covid-19 (the majority of medical evidence says they do NOT), instead we’re going to talk about an even scarier topic – the possibility that wearing face masks may actually be harmful to you.


Ask yourself – why are we forcing healthy, asymptomatic people to wear face masks to prevent the spread of a virus that has a 99% infection-survival rating and puts it on part with the seasonal flu?

I suppose if we knew that face masks actually worked to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus, then MAYBE it would be a reasonable trade-off to accept the risks of wearing face masks in return for the benefit of reducing the spread of Coronavirus. The problem is that the scientific community does NOT agree that masks actually work to stop the spread of the virus, we’ve seen countless examples of countries where mask wearing is mandatory and yet the virus is still out of control, research tells us that the face masks most people wear are effectively worthless in the fight vs Covid-19, and that by wearing face masks we are preventing the development of herd immunity and causing our world to have to deal with Covid19 far longer than we should have to.

All of this would be bad enough if it was simply a comedy of errors, but the real problem is that forcing healthy people to constantly wear face masks is not without risks. There is growing concern in the scientific community that constantly wearing face masks can cause REAL health problems – when I say ‘real’ health problems, I’m talking about the kind that actually make YOU sick vs the ‘made-up’ plandemics that affect ‘a friend of a friend’ (and are driven by political and financial motives more than genuine concerns about our health).

Contrary to what you’ve been told by mainstream media, there are numerous articles that discuss the health problems that can arise from wearing face masks all the time. I’ve got a growing list of medical references (at the bottom of this page), but here are a couple of easy-to-read articles encourage you to review on this topic to get started.

Using these articles and the numerous references provided at the bottom of this article, I have compiled 10 reasons why I believe constantly wearing face masks may be harmful to your health.

Again I will point out the following:

  • I am not a doctor and I am not giving you medical advice.
  • I’m just an Average Joe who likes to gather information on my own and make my own decisions. I encourage you to do the same.
  • I use the word “MAY” because nothing is 100% and every person’s medical response is different.

1-Masks may cause a host of minor but annoying adverse reactions.

Although none of these may be life-threatening, frequent mask wearers often report difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, headache, lightheadedness, dizziness, anxiety, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and other subjective symptoms while wearing medical masks.

In addition, face masks are causing a host of rashes, allergies, skins reactions, and acne problems. Does this look fun?

Face masks cause your exhalation breaths to often travel up to your eyes and either into your eyes or glasses – drying out your eyes or fogging up your glasses.

Who wants to deal with these nuisances if they don’t have to – especially when the entire reason we are wearing the masks for (i.e. to prevent the spread of coronavirus) doesn’t seem to really work?

2-Masks may inhibit the process of breathing

The process of breathing in this case is the act of taking in healthy oxygen and getting rid of harmful carbon dioxide.

The longer a surgical mask is worn, the more saturated with moisture it becomes, and the more it may inhibit the inflow of oxygen and outflow of carbon dioxide.

Clinical research from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Association of Anaesthesia shows that medical mask may lower blood oxygen levels[R] and may raise carbon dioxide blood levels.[R] This research show that the longer the duration of wearing the mask, the greater the potential fall in a persona’s blood oxygen levels.

While these deviations in oxygen and carbon dioxide may not always reach the clinical criteria for hypoxia (low blood oxygen), hypoxemia (low tissue oxygen), or hypercapnia (elevated blood carbon dioxide), they may deviate enough to cause even healthy individuals to become symptomatic with these conditions.

3-Masks may be breeding grounds for unhealthy pollutants.

When masks make you uncomfortable – either from a skin reaction, dry eyes, foggy glasses, or any number of reasons, this in turn causes you to fiddle with your mask – when you touch your mask you may be bringing the contaminants on your hands onto the mask.

Unless they are kept clean, face masks can quickly become contaminated with the viruses, bacteria, or fungi that find their way or opportunistically grow in the warm, moist environment that medical masks quickly become.

This means if you are wearing a dirty mask, then you may be increasing your chances of getting sick!

UNFORTUNATELY, the more you wash the mask, the less effective it may be because it’s suspected that frequent washing and drying of a cloth mask may decrease the filtration capacity of the mask.

4-Masks may be forcing you to breathe in all the bad stuff your lungs are trying to get out!

As we’ve already noted, face masks may inhibit oxygen intake, and they may trap the carbon dioxide rich breath in the mouth/mask inter-space. Thus, a fraction of carbon dioxide previously exhaled is likely to be re-inhaled at each respiratory cycle.

Why does this matter? Because…

“Masks force you to re-breathe a portion of your own breath, including all the stuff (infectious viral particles) the lungs were trying to remove from the body.”

5- Masks may cause Carbon Dioxide Toxicity.

By constantly breathing back in the carbon dioxide your lungs are trying to get rid of, face masks may lower oxygen and may raise carbon dioxide in the blood.

When this happens, your brain may get fooled – to obtain more oxygen and remove more carbon dioxide, the brain may tell the lungs to increase the rate (frequency) and depth of breaths.[R]

The end result – you may end up breathing in more carbon dioxide filled air faster and this may lead to symptoms of carbon dioxide toxicity.

BONUS – Face Masks May be INCREASING the Severity of Covid-19!

As if 2020 couldn’t be bad enough, the possibility that more nationwide mask mandates could be on the horizon is downright frightening, because more evidence is emerging to suggest that constantly wearing a mask may actually make your outcomes associated with Coronavirus worse!

6- Face Masks may REDUCE your immunity to fight against viruses

We know that  a drop in oxygen levels (hypoxia) is associated with an impairment in immunity. We also see evidence that constant face mask wearing may reduce oxygen levels. It doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots – doesn’t it stands to reason that if you continually put yourself in a state of hypoxia because of continual face mask use, you may be reducing your immunity defenses — making harder for you to fight against any virus, including Covid-19?

If this is true then wearing your mask may be putting you at risk for a worse outcome if you do get sick with “The Covid!”

By wearing a mask, the exhaled viruses will not be able to escape and will concentrate in the nasal passages, enter the olfactory nerves and travel into the brain… Face masks decrease oxygen, increase carbon dioxide, and alter breathing in ways that INCREASE susceptibility and severity of CoVID-19

Russell Blaylock, MD, author of The Blaylock Wellness Report newsletter, is a nationally recognized board-certified neurosurgeon, health practitioner, author, and lecturer.

Here’s another article that talks about this problem: “Studies have shown that hypoxia can inhibit the type of main immune cells used to fight viral infections called the CD4+ T-lymphocyte. This occurs because the hypoxia increases the level of a compound called hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), which inhibits T-lymphocytes and stimulates a powerful immune inhibitor cell called the T-regs. This sets the stage for contracting any infection, including COVID-19 and making the consequences of that infection much graver. In essence, your mask may very well put you at an increased risk of infections and if so, having a much worse outcome. In addition, reduced oxygenation can accelerate cancer growth.”

7-Face Masks may INCREASE the concentration of viruses in your lungs and nose

If you are wearing a mask, especially an N95 mask or other tightly fitting mask, you may be rebreathing any viruses you may have (including Covid19), and this may raise the concentration of the virus in the lungs and the nasal passages. Scientists have told us that people who have the worst reactions to the coronavirus have the highest concentrations of the virus early on.

As a result, Dr Blaylock also says that “By wearing a mask, you may actually be increasing the severity of CoVID-19 as the increased tidal volume [caused by mask wearing] delivers the viral particles deeper into the lungs.”

Definition: Tidal volume is a measure of the amount of air a person inhales during a normal breath.

8-Covid-19 appears to be more dangerous when there is less oxygen in the blood.

We’ve been told that constant face mask usage may lower blood oxygen levels.

We been told that “Covid-19 becomes more dangerous when blood oxygen levels decline because Low blood levels of oxygen is a critical issue in the pathogenicity of CoVID-19 and the virus’ ability to infect cells is markedly ENHANCED by oxygen desaturation. [R]”

As noted on this article…”Asymptomatic or mild cases of CoVID-19 become more severe when an infected individual is masked, oxygen lowers, viral load increases from particle re-breathing, and the disease overwhelms the innate immune system.”

The science behind this is as follows (from the same article)…

  1. “The main purpose of the innate immune response is to immediately prevent the spread and movement of foreign pathogens throughout the body.[R]
  2. The innate immune system plays a crucial role in destroying the virus, preventing infection, or decreasing the viral load to decrease the severity of infection.
  3. The innate immunity’s effectiveness is highly dependent on the viral load. If face masks increase viral particle re-breathing at the same time they create a humid habitat where SARS-CoV-2 remains actively infectious, the mask increases the viral load and can overwhelm the innate immune system.”

The result is that face masks may be supercharging the infectionous of coronavirus!

9-Face Mask Use is Delaying the World from reaching Herd Immunity vs Covid-19

As noted by a growing number of scientists around the world, lockdowns and face masks DELAY the development of herd immunity. This is important because without herd immunity or a reliable vaccine, we may never get rid of Covid-19!

(Why would those in charge of our health, want to keep us from developing herd immunity and instead push us all towards a vaccine – it certainly makes you wonder, right?)

Meanwhile, can you imagine if we have to live with Covid-19 for years? The harm caused to society could be so devastating we may never recover from it.

But there is another way…

As noted by the Great Barrington Declaration (GBD) “The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk. We call this Focused Protection.”

The GBD is collection of infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists that does NOT recommend masks and instead suggests that we can defeat Covid19 with “Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold.”

The Great Barrington Declaration also goes on to say that…

  • Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching – without masks.
  • Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed – without masks.
  • Restaurants and other businesses should open – without masks.
  • Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume – without masks.
  • People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity – without masks.

10-Face Mask use may be making underlying conditions worse.


Cancers grow best in environments with low oxygen. Low oxygen environments also promote inflammation which can promote the growth, invasion and spread of cancers.[R]

Continual Low Oxygen Levels may also be a factor in atherosclerosis and lead to increased cardiovascular (heart attacks) and cerebrovascular (strokes) diseases.[R]

Face masks make breathing more difficult. For people with COPD, face masks are in fact intolerable to wear as they worsen their breathlessness.[R]

Are face masks making all these underlying conditions worse?

Are Masks Potentially Harmful to Kids?

In other articles, we talked about kids being at low risk for Covid-19 and NOT being the superspreaders they were initially thought to be. We also know that face masks may potentially be causing harm to people who constantly wear them – and that’s true for our kids too.
